e90/92 M3 Steering wheel on x5 e70

Hello fellas!

Wanted to know if you could install an e90/e92 M3 steering wheel on an X5 e70. Is the wiring the same? Would it be PNP? I assume that the circumference would probably be smaller.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Why? I have a e90 m3 and a 12 x5 and wonder why you want to do this?

It's actually quite simple. The standard x5 e70 steering wheel is thin and doesn't have the the feel of a MSport or M wheel. The M wheel as you know has the stitching and thick.

The MSport X5 steering wheel are not as easy to come by, and the M3 steering wheels are a lot easier to get.

Thanks

Yes it's a great question actually. The E9x M3 steering wheel looks identical to the X5M steering wheel with the exception of the lower trim piece (notably right where the ///M logo is), which shouldn't make any difference. Even the paddles are identical, as well as the buttons on the upper trim piece (still slightly different to the X5 M Sport upper trim piece).

I'm pretty certain it would fit, but would the plugs/electronics all work correctly?

There are plenty of E9x M3 steering wheels for sale - maybe buy one of those and try it out. Worst case scenario it doesn't work but you could easily re-sell it.

I am sure it will fit but will all the buttons work, I am not sure. The left buttons are the same but your right buttons are different.

As for the paddles, you should be able to retrofit but them but it may be some work.

As a favor, would you be able to measure the circumference of your M3 steering wheel. Then perhaps I can get a X Msport and XM measurements and compare.

Thanks...

I'm away from home otherwise I'd try and help. I see you're in Miami, local to me (sort of) too... I would be willing to bet it'd be a direct PNP. Of course, you'd want to verify the button configurations and make sure they're the same.

Thanks,
The X5M and M3 wheels are different size, where the M3 wheel is about 1 inch smaller. Also, the number of turns lock to lock is different. Hence, a smaller wheel on the X5 may be uncomfortable compared to the X5M wheel.

My suggestion would be to sit in both X5M or X6M and an M3 and you compare to your wheel size.

Thanks I really appreciate the information... This might change everything for me, I was going to venture out and start gathering all the parts.
