New to the forum, new to BMWs! Looking for 10-12 X5M

Hi guys, just registered and have been reading as much as possible on X5Ms... We're looking for something sportier for my wife (again - we had a '06 Cayenne Turbo S that was totaled, and then a Saab 9-7x Aero after that, and NOW a 2010 Mercedes GL550) and I have always had my eye on X5Ms, but have been waiting for the depreciation to kick in. Seems like that's happened!

Overall I'm looking for a decent example of a '10-'12 (assuming there are no significant changes year over year in the first 3 years of production?) and seeing as these cars are getting cheaper quickly, I'm looking to spend about $40k or less.

With that said, how well do these cars fare from a reliability standpoint, particularly once they're out of warranty? It looks like coils are a common problem (they were on the Cayenne too) and that there may be a few electrical gremlins around batteries. Is there anything else significant to watch for? I saw that the lesser X5s have timing chain problems... Any sign of that in the X5Ms?

Appreciate the feedback and input. We're in the market now, so if you're looking to sell your truck, let me know. Thanks!

Another question to tack onto this - how much of an impact are miles making on these cars? I see many with 50-90k on them and I'm wondering how well your cars are aging in terms of mechanical wear & tear (or expensive maintenance) as well as interior fit & finish.

From what I am seeing, if you want to spend $40k or less, I don't think you will find a 2012 X5M for that price. Even a 2011 will be tough unless it has a ton of miles.
For the 2011, theres a difference depending on when it was made - before or after 10/10.
Having an X5M out of warranty is probably not the best idea, but some people do it.
Look up some of the problems some folks are having with their injectors.

Would you mind elaborating? Mine was produced after this date and I'm wondering what issues I avoided.

Thanks

Fair advice, thank you. Regarding a warranty, let's assume out the door with a 'high' mile '11 I can spend $40k, TTL and interest on a loan included. If I want a CPO car, I'm looking at $52k+ just for the principal, and suddenly that car becomes a $60k car at the end of the day. $20k is a huge gulf to cross for what might be $5k in repairs over the time I keep the car... Please tell me if I'm missing something here. Thanks!

Regarding the YoY changes, I just found this post via Googling... Bookmarked as this seems very helpful!

I don't know about any issues mechanically - seems to be more cosmetic / functionality stuff

I just don't think the math works out on getting a 2012 X5M for $40k. If you want a CPO, those look to be in the mid - high $50s. I don't know long you intend on keeping the car, but if you're out of warranty, replacing injectors alone will prob cost $5k...i think some people even got quoted $8k.

Nothing new here. The thing to remember is that the injectors will need to be done. It's just a matter of when.

Now up to 33 000km, just some cometic issues and tire wear.

What seems to be the interval on injectors? One of the cars I'm looking at had them done 6 months and 6,000 miles ago. That seems pretty safe? What other major 'wear' items are there?

How do you mean the math doesn't work out? $40k for a 2011-2012 is vastly cheaper than a $60k CPO... Even with repairs thrown in over the course of ownership, unless we're talking a new motor, and even then CPO is only 2 years, right?

yes, but the question was what was the difference in the 2011 models - before and after 10/10.

Buy a 2011 CPO.. jst up your budget another 45-7k

not much of a difference in paymentr for the security you get with warranty

FYI- my warranty expired 2,000 miles ago.. and I just got a HIgh Battery Drain -- $220 fix + $510 for battery)
now i fought bmw bc how recent and got that down to $1100 ish total

i just did a quick searech on Autotrader for 2011-2012 X5m across country and under $50k

have you looked up prices prior to posting this? bc what you want is realistic ? here - no busting just showing you theres almost nothing at $40k or below and if it is, miles are very high

Don't underestimate the potential repair costs on any BMW M vehicle. Dealer CPO is always inflated and that extra 2 years isn't that long.

I paid $2,700 for 60mos, 85k miles, $100 deductible warranty from Carmax when I bought my '10 X5M almost 2 years ago. So far, it has covered almost $10k in repairs and another $1k or so it didn't cover.

I mean I don't know how you expect to get a 2012 X5M for under $40k because that's not a realistic number based on what I see listed online.

Or, we can go the other way around - where do you see a 2012 X5M for under $40k?

I want a 2015 Maserati Quattroporte for $80k - doesn't mean that's going to happen.

CPO 2012 is going to be 55k with 40k and below miles. CPO 2011 will be 48k with 40k and below miles. You will not find a X5M for under 40k in any condition except salvage.

Right, I'm saying a non-CPO 2011 car can easily be had for about $40k before tax. A CPO 2012 (not many 2011s left) is going to be about $52k or more, and then tax. I was trying to determine whether the $12k+ premium for a CPO car with the same miles as then non-CPO car is worth the additional outlay.

There are quite a few 2010s now well under $40k, and a few 2011s and even 2012s, many of which look to have clean (or even 1-owner) histories.

can you give the url where you are seeing a 2012 X5M for under $40k? I'm curious to see the options and mileage on that.

This one popped up recently - Cars.com URL and here's the Autocheck showing it as 1 owner with no accidents. What's 72k on a modern car?

There was a silver one that dropped off last week at $39,990 with 78k or so.

A question on this - the YoY changes link above shows 2011 cars "As of 9/10 production:" as having the changes - I'm considering a 9/10 production date car, would this have the changes, or not, and/or what's the easiest way to tell? Thanks.

72,000 on the 2012 seems a bit high to me. I don't know where you live, but that one doesn't seem to have the cold weather package or active seating.

you can tell the options and the Production Date by looking up the last 7 of the VIN

Very cool, thank you for that link. Do you happen to know how that site represents the active seating option? Would it be something like 'S488A
Lordosenstütze Fahrer u. Beifahrer Lumbar support, driver and passenger'? Curious what your take is on the active seating as well, is it like Mercedes' where it inflates bladders under lateral g-forces to keep you in place?
