X6 ActiveHybrid testdrive
On the weekend I took an X6 xDrive 40d and an X6 ActiveHybrid for a testdrive. I hadn't driven an X5 or an X6 before but I knew that they handle very well for an SUV. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they handle very well fullstop. And my God does the hybrid version go when you put your foot down, not that the diesel was slow either.
I wrote a wee review on my blog so check it out there if you're interested. Cheers! http://urbanemusings.wordpress.com/2...-x6-testdrive/

Nice review! i was wondering how does the tranny work. I know it has 2 cvts and 7 gears. So does it drive like a cvt with 7 "fake" gears or some other way that i dont understand?

I am dumbfounded why anyone would by the X6 Hybrid.
it weighs almost 6,000 lbs., Almost 1,000 lbs more than the 3.5. Gas mileage is no better. Why wouldn't you just get a V8 for less? Honestly it drives exactly like a regular 7 speed automatic. I didn't even know it was a CVT until I read up on it afterwards so it must be a particularly slick one as I would certainly have noticed if it behaved like a regular CVT. I've driven a Nissan Primera with a CVT and that was a hateful thing. In fact the only thing I noticed when driving it was how there was no pause in power delivery as it changed gear. I thought that was the electric drivetrain continuing to provide propulsion as it changed but that doesn't make sense. Now that I know it is a CVT it is explained. So yes, it feels exactly like a regular automatic, only it is the smoothest most seamless automatic ever.

One reason people would get the hybrid is for tax reasons. It does use less fuel than the 50i (9.9l vs 12.3l /100kms) and produces less CO2 (231gm vs 299gm /km). In some European countries this would make a big difference to your taxes. And the hybrid is quite a lot faster than the 35i. But I think most people who buy it will do so simply because money is no object and they want to own the world's most powerful hybrid.
