x5 Newbie with a Navigation question??
Hello everyone just purchased a 2012 x5 premium for my wife. This is our first BMW so we are a little excited! ha!! Its still at the dealer so no pics just yet but I do have a bunch of questions. Does anyone know if Navigation can be installed in a non-navi equiped x5? I asked the sales man and he imediatly told me it was not possible. Also where can I find a set of factory running boards?

Just a guess, but I'd say it is possible but prohibitively expensive and a challenge at best. In the X5, there's a different dash trim piece, plus there are probably several different modules needed besides the nav unit. Who knows if the wiring allows plug-n-play... I like the system and the full integration but many are just as happy with a Garmin, etc.

Anything you add on after your car is assembled will be more expensive than the option price. Possible? I would say so, but going to be very expensive. For me, buying a luxury car, I don't want to have a gps unit hanging on my windshield.

You can find running boards on eBay for under $300 (try search for running boards E70). I am not sure about adding a Navigation system but I'm sure it can be done (it may be a little expensive). Check out Alekshop.com.

The running boards can be fitted for pretty much around $400-500 if you source the kit from a dealership that doesn't try to siphon as much as possible from your wallet, and pending you install it yourself.
As for Navigation, some members are doing retrofits with kits and you're looking at about 3-4k if you replace the parts yourself. Coding is required, but these people who shall remain unnamed can code remotely if you have the proper computer and an interface cable they ship to you. Since your car is still pretty new, you can possibly have it traded for a new one with the exact options you want at pretty much the same cost vs doing all the work yourself and not having 100% OEM fitment. I see you're in Spring... BMW of Houston North might be willing to work with you if you explain your situation but I've done the same trade-in thing myself and Momentum BMW and Advantage BMW and I can say they are easy to work with. Stay away from Momentum West. Last edited by Legitimate; 04-17-2012 at 01:19 AM.. |
