X5 garage door opener
I am having trouble programing my garage door with my X5. I have a 2008 X5, and a Chamberlain LiftMaster, Professional, 1/3 h.p. Just put the LiftMaster in during the summer of '09, so I should be compatible, right? Any suggestions? Is it even compatible?

I have the same door opener (pretty sure, know it is a Chamberlain Liftmaster, but too lazy to run out to the garage to look at the exact model.....)
Works with my 2010 X5, and I was also able to program my 07 335i when I had it, so it should work. Are you following all the instructions (learn button on the back, known working remote close by, etc.?)

i had a lot of trouble as well. but here's what i tried and got it to work.
- reset it...hold 1st and 3rd button until it starts blinking rapidly - hold the old transmitter as close to the mirror as you can and press it at the same time with any of the 3 buttons on the mirror until it starts blinking really fast if that worked then you're good. if that didn't, do this right away as soon as you do the two above - hit the learn button on the garage and then hit one of the buttons on the mirror i had such a hard time. i was doing one of the steps. what worked for me was doing all the steps one after the other. i hope that helps.

Common problem that people have with any Homelink type of system in the car. Make sure to follow the instructions for "Rolling Code" type of garage door opener.

Programming
I had a problem, too.
My solution - I had to place the transmitter behind the mirror, between it and the windshield. It would not read the signal otherwise. |

Homelink programming
My problems had nothing to do with the positioning of the transmitter. It was related to the instructions for "Rolling Code" type garage door openers. Rolling Code GDO's sync-ing requires you to press the reset button on the garage door opener unit(on ceiling of the garage) in order to sync to the existing code/freq. This did the trick(for all 3 garage door openers I have).

That's right, follow the instructions in the owners manual. Hit the button on your door opener, then the button on your mirror.
Did it for my 3 garage doors on my X3 seven years ago, did it for my X5 two weeks ago. Followed the manual each time.

I've programmed the Homelink on several BMWs for my garage door opener - and aside from following the Homelink and door opener instructions carefully - here is a tip that made it a flawless process for me:
When holding the remote to the Homelink system (mirror), hold it BEHIND the mirror, from the windshield side. That works every time. From the other side it is hit or miss....

+1 to this - hold the remote between the windshield and the back of the mirror.
I struggled almost an hour trying different ways to get the mirror to blink rapidly. Ignore the distance recommendation in the instructions and place the remote against the back of the mirror. Worked instantly! |
