Active Drive is ideal for European parking!!

. .for the tight streets crammed with parked cars on both sides. .

I just got the chance today to be a passenger in an X6 35d fully loaded!!

My impressions:

1. My crazy friend who drove it, took an abrupt, sharp 90 deg. turn at 31 mph (as if trying to avoid a collision) and the beast didn't wobble at all!! All I got is the effect of centrifugal force. . . understood why sports package is necessary, especially for seats. .Slight screaming of back wheels. . .even if they where 325's.

2. Taking off from dead start is off course not a rocket boost. . .2.4 tons are obvious, but from zero to 49.7 mph took about 3 seconds.

3. Surprised a bit there's no upper handle for passenger on the right side.. . to hold on when the monster bursts off. .

4. The rear view camera is not quite HDTV. (looks a bit like youtube before hi quality option) .and the car also has the I Drive, NAV, and all the video gizmos. . .Looked at the tiny camera below the BMW badge on the back, and figured out why. . but the graphics on the screen when parking where very cool. . .

5. Was impressed by the self pivoting mirrors when backing up. . like I used to do with my mirrors (manually) on my old Pajero when backing up.. .rotating them downward to see the kerb behind.

6. I Drive is pretty cool and easy to handle. .Loved the glovebox opening (James Bond garage door style) by button. . .not lever.

7. Crazy man floored it downtown and even if I felt the excessive speed, I felt safe. .with no belt on. .and no upper handle to grab.

8. Active Drive is cool when parking in tight spaces. . .you just twist the wheel a bit more than when driving, for parking maneuvers, and the radius changes dramatically.

9. And yes, BMW can provide pneumatic suspension, also on the front. . Need to investigate this more. . .

10. Disk brakes are the size of family size pizza. . .impressive.

11. Star 5 spoke 259 rims look very solid, especially for the roads in Romania.. .and easier to clean than the Y's.

12. The X6 was Alpine Weiss exterior with Nevada leather and those interior panels that look like carbon fiber.

13. 325 back wheels are amazing!! Reminds you of F1 cars.

Conclusion: Recaro (or sports) seats are a must. . if you have the racing personality. Centrifugal force is going to bang you head on side windows!! while the HumvieX6 will stay in a karate stance.

If the X6 35d had style 259 rims, the back wheels are 315 wide (not 325!).
There is no pneumatic suspension on the front wheels (as per BMW's parts system). Adaptive drive does have the ability to change the 'stiffness' of the suspension, but not by means of a pneumatic system. As per our previous posts, the pneumatic system is only to level out the back of the X6 based on the amount of the load. The interior trim that 'looks like carbon fiber' is called 'Flywheel Black Aluminum'.

Nice writeup though! Thanks!

It's called Active Steering. Active Drive is not the steering system.
