I just picked up some Hibiki 12 this past weekend. I do love me some Japanese whisky.

Laphroig just hits me wrong. Waaay too smoky/peaty for me. Like horseradish and cilantro, you either like it or you don't.

Are the Japanese whiskys smoky/peaty or sweeter like Aberlour?

I can't speak for Yamazaki, as I have yet to try it, but Hibiki and Hakushu are both on the sweeter side, with maybe a hint of smokiness.

I drank my bottle of Hibiki 12 pretty rapidly. Sweeter, since they are aged in barrels that once held plum wine.
The store was out the last time I went in with money burning a hole in my pocket. . .

I think you just convinced me to buy some next time I'm at the superstore. You were right about Aberlour, so...

Since the Hibiki was unavailable, I so wanted to try the Yamazaki. But a $90 mistake I did not want to make. I need to find a local establishment that will sell me a snort first. The local Irish pub seems to be snobbish and not include the Japanese artists.

Saw a bottle of Yamazaki yesterday for $225. Must have been 25 years old or something. I opted for the Aberlour 16.

Seems Aberlour is a solid choice. Leaving the gym and wasn't sure what to refresh myself with when I got home. Think you swing the vote

Really the perfect Scotch. Not as strong as the A'Bunadh, but still very full flavor. Stands up well to a splash of seltzer.
