Is the X6M a good fit for me?

Currently drive a C63 coupe and the kids are getting bigger. Turns out I'm shuttling them around more than I thought I was. So I end up driving my GL more than I would like.

So looking at getting out of the C63 and into a 4-door sedan/SUV that is similar in power to my C63, but with a little more luxury. Thought about a F10 M5, but that thing is huge. The E63 is a tad smaller, but not much. And looking for a bit more luxury than an M3 or C63 sedan. Not an Audi fan unless they bring an RS6 over.

I've seen some used X6M's for decent prices, but they aren't close enough to test drive. I'm going to try and drive a X6 5.0 just to get a feel.

I know the X6M weighs more than an M5, but does it seem as huge? The specs are pretty similar.

Any input much appreciated.

Just a quick note/correction X6 or X6M is considered an SAV, not an SUV. "Sport Activity Vehicle", not "Sport Utility Vehicle". Second, Mercedes (E63, C63 or S600) are all passenger's cars. They are great vehicles, but not designed with driver in mind. BMW X6 and X6M is a driver's car. Designed for the driver in mind. My personal opinion, there is nothing better out there (driving since 1985 and I've driven them all in my life-time)

I'm going to make this simple - the X6 50/M is a ponderous beast. I've never driven an F10 M5 but I previously had an e60 M5 and the X6 50 feels about twice as big.

However, I recently had an X5 35 loaner and I was impressed. This loaner did not have the sport suspension nor the adaptive drive (both of which I have) - it also did not have the incredible sound of the 5.0 (which some have said sounds even better than the M). Still, I think I preferred driving the 35i to the 50i (even though I REALLY missed the sound).

I will admit to loving the X6 for road trips with the family - but as a daily driver, it is just too big and as I mentioned "ponderous" for me.

My only experience with the F10 M5 is as a passenger in a hot lap around the BMW Handling Course / skid pad at the BMW Performance Center, most of which was spent going sideways drifting in the wet. It was freaking awesome.

I've also had the pleasure of driving an X6M (not mine, it was BMW's - thanks BMW!) on the same track and she did awesome. What BMW has engineered with the X6M is nothing short of a miracle, it drives and handles like a car it's size should not be able to.

I think the X6M is similar in room for the driver and passengers, with more cargo space. You also sit higher. So if you think the M5 is huge, you're not likely to think the X6M is smaller.

That being said, I daily drive my X6M, and take my 2 young kids out in the DadMobile (tm) all the time. It's awesome. Drives like a car (but not like an M5) and the performance is definitely there for any driving situation. It's not a dedicated track car and as such is perfect for what it is.

It will feel 10x smaller than your GL (I have a GL550 as well), be much faster to the point that it's funny, and handling is not comparable; the GL is a barge when it comes to handling. It won't be as nimble as a C63 or an M5, of course.

Luxury wise, make sure to get one with Full Merino leather and Nappa leather dash, and all the tech gadgets, and chances are you won't even know there's unexposed plastic in the car unless you spend a lot of time staring at the B-pillar or the inside of the trunk.

I considered an M5 before getting my X6M. Part of the decision was that I previously owned an X6 35i, loved everything about it and missed her after I sold her. No regrets here after 11.5k miles since January including a 1200 mile road trip from BMW Performance Center through Tail of the Dragon back to South Florida.

Any huge differences between a 2012 and 2013? Facelift likely due out in 2015?

I beg to differ, X series are way too heavy, while the E63 and C63 isn't exactly a light weight, they drive better than the X series. No amount of engineering is gonna mask the weight and the high center of gravity.

LED Headlights (as an option) and a new M Performance Package on the 35i/50i which is a slight bump in HP (approx 10%) and some nice interior and exterior touches.

Complete re-do in 2015 (expected) and will lose about 400lbs if it mirrors the X5 re-do.

I have serious doubts in regarding F15 losing 400 pounds over the E70. New cars often comes with new options and equipments that frequently negates the weight savings of the new platform. I would be happy if BMW can trim 200 pounds.

How's the 6 sp transmission in the X6m? There aren't any close by to test. Closest thing is an X65.0 which I'm going to try to drive this weekend.

Any comparisons to the DCT in the M3/M5 or the MCT in the C63/E63?

X5 lost about 230lb on 50i trim
Not much change
At least it's getting new (for X5) Tu engine, like the 5-er LCI, so it'll be few ticks quicker

It is an automatic. I drove a Panamera S with the PDK and it felt like there was a little midget race car driver in the car somewhere doing race-perfect shifts for me in the car. Much as I love the X6M, there is no comparison to a dual clutch transmission and an automatic.

In sport mode it is pretty aggressive and will downshift to keep in the powerband, and will also upshift late / at proper time (unlike regular D mode which is geared towards fuel economy and will upshift way early all the time). All in all, in S mode it's programmed for sporty shifts but a DCT it is not. A good dual clutch transmission is a whole different ball game.

I came from a w211 e55 amg to a x6m. The room is about the same in both cars as the x6 is not a very roomy sav. But it is a sav after all so it's gonna look bigger than it actually is. And I also had a few f10 528i as rentals. And they feel very crampy compared to my x6. And again. This sav handles very well for what it is

Got to drive an X6 5.0 today. It didn't feel as big as I was expecting which was nice. Really liked the interior as this one had all the bells/whistles. Power was plenty, but there was noticeable turbo lag. I've never owned or really driven many turbos, but it seemed there. Also the steering felt, for a lack of a better word, heavy. Seemed like it took a lot of effort to turn. Even moreso than my GL. Would like to drive an X6M now to see if it feels a little more responsive. I assume it would given that it's an M.

When I first bought my 2013 X6M, I was very disappointing, after having for 3 years x6 5.0i (Factory tuned up). Car didn't feel same responsive, and I was yelling at myself, until now, when I got myself a stage 1 tune, with completely re writing my ECU. Now, it is a scary mAAAAnster. Its undescribable, unexplainable.....you just have to have it to understand.

Yes, there is some lag on the 50i. Not necessarily off the line, but coming out of a 10-15mph turn, you give it gas and nothing happens for a few seconds. A friend of mine did the Dinan tune and said it all went away.

The steering on the X5/X6 is really heavy (for some reason the X5 feels more heavy). I'm surprised that more people (Moms?) don't complain about this. Active Steering fixes it (a rare option in the X5/X6) as does upgrading to the M. For some reason the X6M has much lighter steering than the regular X6.

So in short, I think you will find that the X6M has lighter steering and therefore possibly feels lighter. I'm not 100% sure about the lag however - I believe the turbos are piped differently in the M than in the 50i and that is designed to reduce the lag.
