Carbon Build Up in Valves.
So BMW's had my car for about 2-3 weeks now. And they got a technical bulletin on this.
Build up of carbon in my valves. I have Extended warranty and they told me this is not covered. Is there something I'm missing here? Last edited by DChan; 06-30-2014 at 03:18 PM.. |

There is no way a walnut blast should cost that much.

TBH from what I've been hearing, and I've called a few other shops in Vancouver, they're doubting that my Engine light is on is due to carbon build up. Last edited by DChan; 06-30-2014 at 03:18 PM.. |

As an aside carbon build up is a fact of life now for direct injection motors. No amount of cleaning additive added to your fuel will help either since fuel no longer goes up there. The build up is from the blow back of the recirculating system. A catch can would help, but not entirely prevent the occurrence. The walnut blast has proven to be the best maintanece method of keeping it under control and is a technique regularly used by BMW USA over here in the states. Not sure if BMW Canada uses the same procedure, but I don't see why they wouldn't. I plan to do mine every 40k miles as I've hear people say every 50k miles and others, especially with the N54 motor, every 30k miles. So I'm going right in the middle. Definitely check out another dealership since you are still in cpo warranty. You could first also go to an independent mechanic for a proper diagnosis so you have some ammo when you go into the next dealer. Good luck! Let us know what happens either way. |

I've been reading around. People with engine lights come on due to this issue had been covered under CPO warranty. I got denied once and my service advisor sent the claim out again. I don't see why this isn't covered either especially when my check engline light is on. Thanks. My friend who's a mechanic at the BMW vancouver store even said it should be covered. I will bring my car to them if brian jessel can't do anything about the issue. |

Hey all, Just received a call back from my service advisor. Good news, they are doing the walnut blasting under goodwill and also informed me that this is not covered under the CPO warranty. Regardless I believe it's your service advisor that can get the job done for you.

I've had the carbon cleaning done twice on my 2009 135i. Both times I've witnessed a noticeable improvement in how the engine breathes. I also noticed a slight improvement to MPG after having it done. On all 80% highway driving I used to get 260 miles on a full tank (13.5 US gallons) Now I regularly approach 300 miles per tank on the same route. I'm fortunate that I have a buddy who owns a shop that can take care of the carbon build up at a very reasonable price, so I get it done every 40k miles.
My gf and I recently bought an 2011 X6 35i which is why I lurk here too. |
