Mobil 1 5W-30???

So I just had an oil change on my 2012 X5 35i. The nearest authorized BMW center is too far so I did it at a local shop. They put Mobil 1 5W-30 in my car while for Mobil 1 oil, the recommended is 0W-40 on Mobil's website (also on BMW service manual). However, I notice that some other approved oil are 5W-30. My question is, is it gonna cause some damage to the engine with Mobil 5W-30? Is Mobil 1 5W-30 different from 5W-30 of other brands??

I believe it needs to be an LL04 approved oil. Check the bottle, I don't believe M1 5w-30 is LL04.

Here's what I would do. Buy a set of approved BMW oil, take it back to the shop and have them swap out the oil. It's okay driving on the M1 for now, but I'd prefer if you use the BMW oil.

here it is:

There is a difference in using the Mobil 1 oil in the US and certain European countries.

I think it was discussed somewhere on the board and it had something to do with the ethanol content of US (and/or non-euro) gas. Not sure why that would matter, but I'm pretty sure that's the explaination.

EDIT: Here's some more info.

An official BMW TIS document in one of those links says (in regards to LL-04 oils) "They must not be used outside this area (the EU, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein) as problems are often encountered with fuel quality"

I wouldn't worry too much. Mobil 1 is still a reasonable oil. I would personally do your next oil change in 5k miles however, with the correct oil.
