Dual intake for 2012 X5 35i

Hi all,

Being my first I would like to say I am enjoying browsing through this forum as the X5 scene down under is not as widely recognized as it is in the US.

As my first post i would like to share my first 'performance mod' on my 2012 X5 35i. Some of you may know the LCI diesel X5s sold in Australia had a dual intake. I was able to obtain an OEM LCI diesel intake and attach it to the air-box of my 35i with a 23 degree, 220mm long, and 100mm diameter silicon hose.

Did it increase power? all i can say is the car is more eager in the mid-range i.e. the slight hesitation that occurred between 2.5krpm and 4krpm is now less evident however it has not disappeared entirely.

Now the best part THE NOISE from the N55:

The bark from the exhaust is louder on startup.

The induction sound in the mid-range in 2nd and 3rd gear is more enjoyable to listen i.e. louder

Finally the increased exhaust noise as the needle swings past 3krpm together with the exhaust flap opening is my fav.

I will upload some photos of this setup around mid next week when i fly home from work.

Herro, mines a 2013 35i and I was thinking of adding a cold air intake before but got some feedback from the folks here and they've said the current setup is already like a cold air intake and adding an aftermarket one may even decrease performance. Looking at my engine bay, I was actually wondering why there's another somewhat closed hole (pic below), looking at the 8Cyl/M, I can see that there's intakes. If you end up doing some type of split and making use of the extra hole, please let me know how it goes, really interest.

KayTees, I agree that the original intake on the 35i was a cold air intake (CAI). However when BMW upgraded the diesel engines on the E70 LCI X5s a dual intake system was installed that occupies both the holes on the radiator shroud where as one was blanked off in the 35i. Theoretically the dual system will provide more air hence its a larger CAI. The picture shows how its attached in a X5 40d.

Sweet, that looks like exactly the thing I need, just need a part number or something. Maybe I'll have to DIY it and do some hacking and some good sealing.

Hmm, might not connect at the manifold. Interested though if you want to be the first to buy and try it!

The intake tube is made up of 2 separate sections, using a 100mm diameter silicon hose the front section can be connected to the stock air box which also has a 100mm connection, no need to connect it to the manifold. When i upload the photos it will be clear.

The part no omgboost has provided is correct, however the snorkel your are after has no part number i.e its only attached to the second half of the intake. I believe BMW treated it as a single part. If buying from a wrecker ensure the front section is included for this particular part number. Now as promised pictures of my intake.

I see what you did there, can you provide the complete parts list of what you used to get this to work?

So far I see you used: 13717812058 which is the main snorkel.
But that 100mm fitting, where did you get that? Is in for automotive purposes? I'm concerned about the temperature levels in the engine compartment may distort the hose fittings and cause leaks.

What about the clamps you used?

The parts required for the entire setup are as follows

- OEM BMW intake snorkel 13717812058 (rear section was not used) this was sourced from a wrecker in UK. $AUD140 (including freight)

- 2 x 100mm jubilee clip sourced from local hardware store $AUD10

- 23° Silicone Hose Elbow 4" (102mm) I.D ~$AUD50 (including freight)
- Working temperature -60°C to 180°C ( -75°F to 350°F)
- Working pressure 305 PSI
- Purchase Link

It cost me $AUD200 for the entire setup. Hope that helps everyone out.

Anyone else tried this yet?

I just did it on mine with the same exact stuff the OP got.

My thoughts:

1) 100mm jubilee clips definitely too small. Gonna need at least 115 minimum.
2) the fit from the silicone hose to the dual intake isn’t perfect. It comes out very slightly towards the right.
3) the 23 deg hose is 100mm Long - part number AF9007-400

@evilchargerfan - Have you noticed any differences post install? Also, can the original piping be modified vs buying the silicone pipe?

I love this mod. It's so simple yet satisfying, from what I'm reading. I've got a 2012 E70 with N55 motor. All the listing I've found for this twin duct intake, list it fitting 2014 and up X5's. Does anyone know for sure if this will fit a 2012, and where in the US I can buy it?

Only the silicon hose gives it a bit crappy look.

would it not be possible to use an v8 air intake setup, that looks great to.

I added this to my M57. The intake is for N57 on e70 so needed to saw off half of the connection tube and replace with 8" silicon hose.
