2012 x35d pricing?
So I wrecked my '14 Jetta Sportwagen TDI a couple weeks ago and it is totaled. I've driven about 10 different cars over the past week and I think I've narrowed it down to the X5 x35d. I need a little help with pricing though. I started out taking an X3 out for an extended test drive, but decided against it because the standard seats made my back feel like it was in a bench vice. My wife also commented that it was a bit small. When I took it back with my observations, they said they had an X5 that I should take a look at. It is pretty loaded, the only thing it doesn't have is the M Sport Package. It does however have the Sport Activity Package, so it has the Sport Seats. I took it for a drive, and good Lord! That engine! It sounds awesome, and it has power everywhere. I pretty much decided on the spot I was going to buy it, but to appease my sister I was going to look at a Volvo XC90 about an hour away.
I called the salesman on my way out the door to let Dealer B know I was on my way, no answer. I called his cell phone, same, no answer. I leave messages on both and hope for the best. I get there and see the XC90 I'm supposed to drive by the front door. I think, cool, he pulled it up for me. I go inside to ask for the salesman and while I'm waiting I see someone putting a license plate on it!! I hit the roof. The salesman was gone for the day, so I asked to talk to the manager. I let him have it. He apologized profusely, especially when he found out from how far away I came. To his credit he started tripping over himself trying to make me happy. They had another XC90 with 40K additional miles that he said he would give me a free 60K mile warranty to. I told him I would at lease drive it and see what I thought. Long story short? I hated it. I told the salesman so, who relayed it to the manager. When he found out I was looking at an X5, he looked in his inventory region wide, and found a '12 X5 35d at the BMW dealer down the street, with less miles, priced slightly higher than the first one. He sent his sales man down to get I drove it, and had the same tickle in my pickle about it. I told the salesman I was interested, but wasn't interested in playing a negotiating games with a middle man. He went to get the manager, and I told him I want a no BS, out the door price. That's where my conundrum comes from. Dealer A has a CPO '12 35d with 45K miles and everything but the M Sport package. Priced at $39K out the door with no negotiation on my part, or voiced intent to buy. Dealer B has a CPO '12 35d with 29K miles basically the same as Dealer A has, but no Sports Activity Package. Priced at $40K out the door after my "negotiation." Where should I offer price wise for the truck at Dealer A? I actually prefer to buy from Dealer A, just because they have a lot more invested in it. Their salesman has about 3 hours working with me, and has gone out of his way to take great care of me. He's been selling BMWs for 35 years, so it's safe to say he believes in the brand. Funny thing is that I came into that dealer pissed off too because of how I had been mistreated at another brand's showroom in their group. The salesman at Dealer B barely knows anything about the Volvos he sells, let alone BMWs. He was more of a test drive escort than anything else. TL;DR Going into a dealership pissed off at them gives you good negotiating power. |

1st off, M Sport is not available on the diesel.
2nd, I would almost always take the SAV trim over a non-Sport, even if it had more miles. Better seats, anthracite headliner, shadowline exterior trim (vs. chrome ), sport steering wheel (would still swap it more an M Sport or X5M wheel), etc. 3rd, if it's down to these two, I'd use the 'Dealer B' vehicle as a negotiating chip - it has 16K less miles for basically the same price. Sure it has the Sport Package but that's not worth anywhere near 16K. Make these dealers work for your business. 4th, I wouldn't necessarily pick between these 2 vehicles, unless one or both is exactly what you want. These vehicles come equipped a million different ways…many people here spend months searching to find the perfect X, and then have them shipped. Just something to consider. |

Jiggz, Thanks for your input. I definitely plan on using B against A. The sport seats are so much more comfortable. Unfortunately I can't wait to find that "perfect" vehicle, because like I said I totaled my car and I only have a rental until Thursday. Ive been as picky as I can be given my situation, and I'm happy with either option. It's going to come down to value. Given that I prefer Dealer A, what would be a fair price to ask them for given the fact that it has 16K more miles, but with the Sport Activity? |

You'll want the Sport Activity Package, especially if you buy one without it. You'll be kicking yourself every time you see one.

Better to buy a car already equipped. Plus, the steering wheel on the SA package is great, too.

If you think sports seats are comfortable then you should try the comfort seats out. Wouldn't buy one with out them. Last edited by temporaptor; 11-16-2015 at 01:13 AM.. |

^^^agreed
I waited until I could find a a 35d and glad I did. Sport seats are ok but comfort seats are the way to go and frankly the only seats that should be offered. |

Here's a super loaded 2012 diesel that came to the market today: Has AD, 3rd row, tech, cwp, 42k miles, priced under $36k (couldn't tell if it has been CPO'ed).

PM me if you need help. Also, here are two pics: comfort seats vs sport seat (the high bolster on the sport seat will have any man singing a different tune after you get in-and-out a few times!)
