Assuming you are comfortable working with the airbag out of the steering but still energized you can do the check below. Disconnect the battery before popping out the airbag but need to be reconnected to check the voltage. The car needs to running or in ignition mode to check the voltage. DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT DISCONNECT THE HARNESS FROM THE COIL SPRING OR THE AIRBAG!!

Honestly the paddles are not that great with the 8 speed - too much shifting. They look cool, and the tri-stitching does look much better so not all is lost if you buy one and install it, and the paddles aren't functional.
I understand what you mean about too many gears. However I think its fun in the manual mode and I like that you are able to quickly kick down a gear or two while even in the normal "D" mode.

I don't believe it will work on the pre-LCI models. I think there's more info on this if you do a search.

I have a 2012 5.0 M-Sport with no heat.

Can I purchase the X5M wheel to get paddles and heat following the DIY guide?

Thanks,
Pete

If you don't have heated steering from the factory, you would have to wire for it, rather than plug and play with a different wheel.

What about Lane Departure??

No definite info in this thread about whether this retrofit will work if the vehicle is equipped with Lane Departure.

A dealer I am trying to by from says NO; that they are mutually exclusive.
This refers to a
2012 X5 50i with (5AD) Lane Departure and (710) M leather wheel - no paddles
being fitted with
7XA M leather wheel with paddles

So I wanted to write this post and confirm that the shifters work like a charm and steering wheel feels great. I have a sports activity and I think it comes pre-wired to work with paddle shifters. I will post some pictures soon.
so you didnt have paddles before? it worked just by plugging it in? i wonder if that would work on mine i have a 2011 35i x drive.

He didn't have paddles - paddles were not standard until late 2012 model year builds (Nov. 2011 or so), and then you needed the Sport or M Sport package. This refers to the 35i and 50i - the 35d never got paddles and the X5M always had them.

Yes they'll work on yours provided you have the Sport or M Sport package, otherwise it won't work.

Also keep in mind there is an M Sport wheel and X5M wheel - they are very similar, yet a little different.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to add my experience with this project.

2012 X5 Sport with heated steering wheel and shift paddles
Purchased X5M heated steering wheel with DCT shift paddles

After installing the X5M steering wheel, everything worked.
The next day I noticed when attempting to use the volume buttons it would bring up the phone menu instead. The only way to increase or lower the volume was directly from the radio knob.

Swapped over the multi function buttons from the old wheel. All the multi function buttons including the volume buttons work. However the DCT paddles don't not work.
The DME is showing an error code for the shift paddles, inoperable.

Is there a modification I need to do to get this working?

I'm not real surprised your getting an error after switching the buttons, but I am surprised the volume buttons didn't work right?

I swapped from M Sport to X5M steering wheel and everything worked perfectly, same as most people who've done this swap. Obviously the only things that don't sync up are the 2 buttons (///M button and the music button below it) and what they control, but everything still works.

Good luck sorting that out. Can't say I've heard/read this issue on this forum below, but maybe if you searched you'd find something

Ok, ive got 2010 E70 (FF03 -US market) X5 35D (M57d30t2) WITH sport package and I got DCT ("-"left and "+" right) steering wheel installed, all buttons and heating of steering are working properly, ive got slip ring connector wires #2 and #4 directly wired to transmission X8532 (that goes into the transmission mechatronic aka A7000a) #5 and #4 respectively.

Does anyone have a clear answer of what should I add to VO???
What coding do i need in order for this to work?
All i know that i will probably need to change value (wert_01) for paddle shift to some other value!

If the paddle shift are switch based the "simple" wiring should be enough to have them working; if they are resistance based (and I think the +/- style are) you either try to add $2XA to the VO and change the EGS parameter "PADDLE" to wert_02; or you hack the paddle open, remove the resistor and convert it into a simple switch...
One of my buddies have 03/13 X5 with actual M-Sport package he has option $7XA BUT i read his "Kombi.E70.C03", his "GWS.E70.C08" and his *EGS("GKE11KC08") (all modules and parameters with NCSExpert) and there is NO options for paddles!

Im wondering if option $2XA will give me the ability to change wert_02 to...

Just wanted to provide an update.
Finally got the X5M paddles to work. Had to match the resistors from the original sport paddles.
There are no resistors in the X5M paddles.

Hi folks. Happy New Year. I searched a while to find this exact problem, but couldn’t find a solution. My father’s ‘08 X5 is having lock/unlocking issues. Both the key fob and central lock button inside stopped working for a couple of days. The fuses are fine and no DTCs were found. The next day, everything worked as normal. Is this possibly a sign of failing door actuator(s)? Has anyone else had this experience? Thanks in advance. https://www.carcoverworld.com/
