Kidney Grills

Hey Members,

i wanted to make a thread about these over priced kidney grills that everyone is paying for enough is enough.

I will post some pictures of the grill i have, I wrapped it in 3M vinyl. The other rings used to be chrome so i gloss black wrapped these babies and it looks like your typical painted grills you buy except... it costed me my time and 15 bucks lol. i'll post some pictures later on.

How much of your time did you spend making them black?

I just used plastidip on my grill. Took me 20 mins and 10 dollar can of dip. 2 years later they look the same and have not needed to be redone.

first time wrapping, 20 mins total.

dip has a different texture as to wrap it feels like paint

and yes dont waste your originals wrap them

btw to all three replies the grill has three stages it comes apart.

1st comes out of the hood of course,

2nd the rubber piece on the back side comes off

3rd the chrome piece is basically a ring on the inner grill.

wrap it put it together BOOM saves u 150 bucks

Texture is a little different. There's a few techniques on youtube on how to get a smooth texture with dip. No I did not use glossifier.

I think the OEM ones aren't overpriced. I don't mind paying for quality.

Hilarious. You drive an X5M, but find the OEM black grilles to be too expensive?

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I see this on the E46 forums, but those are filled with broke teenagers, so I sorta get it.

Kidneys must be one of the most least expensive mods you can do

for what it is, 150 is a rather high price to pay, also unlike most of u living in USA, we in canada have to pay more for everything in terms of price of the item itself because of the shitty exchange rate and the taxes and fees from importing it. In addition, up here in canada where the roads are full of rocks in the winter, a perfectly painted kidney grill will get chips on the finish within one winter, so by wrapping or dipping, when the finish gets damaged, I simply rewrap it every spring. Lastly, the newer 2013+ grill with the different slats and wider bezel isn't available in black, all the performance grills that comes in black is the older version with thinner bezel and slats.
