Caution!!! Oil Filter Cap Problem

I got a 2012 X5 35i. Wanna share my story with y'all.

In April I had an oil change and the oil gasket leak fixed at a local shop since the nearest BMW center was 50 miles away. Everything seemed fine for a few weeks. One day I was driving on the high way and low engine oil pressure warning and engine malfunction light appeared. I let the local shop check it and they thought it might be a bad oil pressure switch, so they replaced it with a new one. A few days later oil pressure warning and engine malfunction warning came on again. This time brought to a BMW center. They found that all these issues were caused by a missing part on the oil filter cap. The mechanic said he's seen this quite often because when oil change is done in local shops, they might just pull off the part and throw it away along with the dirty filter. Without the center part oil doesn't pass through the filter and flows downward directly.

Hope this will help you guys and remember to tell your mechanic this potential problem if you are having an oil change in independent shops !!!

That's funny because last week when I did my oil change I dropped the new filter in and went to put the cap on and thought "hey, something's missing". Good thing I didn't pitch the old filter. I pulled the center part out of the old filter and buttoned it up. . Duh!

I would never make this mistake because you know you have to change that tiny rubber gasket on the end of the tip. The Oil filter includes that gasket. Should tell someone somethings wrong if they have an extra gasket....
