Radar Detecter Mounting

Any suggestions where to mount a radar detecter in the X6 ? I don't have good luck with the suction cups. Any aftermarket mounts that you may have seen ? Any pictures would also help.
Thank You

Buy a Super Cat from Japanese manuf. Yupiteru. . you can clip it to the sun visor. .it's that light and small (the size of a Motorola Startac). I've been using these detectors for the past six years.

http://nex-computers.tradenote.net/p...Cat-Radar.html

It can be solar-powered, and has a motion sensor for power saving.

There's also another one integrated in a mirror.

the supercat is attached to the sun visor, not the window.

This is what I came up with !

Made a custom mount for the radar detector. Still have to wire it in. Would have liked to have it lower but needed to have it see out the windshield.

I haven't got it done yet, hence no pics, but what I will be doing in my 08 X6 is the same as I've done for years in other cars, mounting my trusted Valentine 1 behind the center rear view mirror, on the passenger side. I put it so that the rear facing radar detector is just to the right of the rear view mirror, and the whole thing is invisible from the drivers side. I just use the V1 factory suction cups, the larger size. They sell you a pack of 2 of each size for like $2, I bought 10 or so packs of them and some extra mounts and I find if I just always leave the suction cup mount up when I move the V1 to other vehicles that it will stay mounted for years on a set of those.

I wire the power from underneath the dash up above the windshield and then down along the mirror mount to the V1 and then I mount the little concealed display somewhere, I am still figuring out where is best for that. I am thinking of blocking the little fuel consumption gauge needle with the. I wish I could route the radar detector output to the BMW Head Up Display, that would be the best choice. I'd like t have it display warnings right beside the speed in the head up display.

I just saw an aftermarket add on head up display from Autosport catalog that could possibly display the radar detector output, I'll be looking into that. I like to mount my V1 as high as possible because you gain increased warning time in hilly terrain. I've only had my X5 about a month, but my V1 has already saved me twice from really bad tickets. I have it just temporarily mounted in the center of the windshield for now.

archwerks: How does the laser "shifting" work? I have been quoted $2,500 for an installed 9500ci which I am prepared to pay but only if it works against laser. Valentine Ones and all the rest are completely useless -- they just inform you that you have been given a ticket.

What a Ordeal !!

I initially posted pictures of my radar detector mounted just left of the steering wheel on the dash using a mount that I fabricated. When I took the panel off under the drivers side dash, I was unsure where to tie in the 12V line for the radar detector. I contacted the dealer and they said you can only tie into the cig lighter circuit, and whatever you do don't splice the small fiber optic lines. That was all I needed to hear so I asked to set up a appointment to have them do it. Then he told me it was 5-6 hours and the cost was $640.00. I almost lost my mind!! I started looking at battery operated detectors but you have to turn them on every time you get in the car, and I know I would forget. After doing a search on the net I followed step by step instructions how to tie into the garage door opener circuit in the overhead console (for windshield or visor mount) and also how to tie into the cig lighter circuit in the ash tray (for dash mount) I followed the instructions and it took less than an hour to do. I elected to scrap my dash mount and go for the visor. I highly recomend that you use these instructions if you are going this route. Let me know if you need them as I am not sure what rules are here for posting this type of stuff.
Best,
Brian

I told you that the Super Cat starts/stops automatically (motion sensor) but you never listened. You didn't have to mod. anything for that one.

Checkout their website.
Shifter front & back to render radar/laser signals incomprehensible to the police, very unobtrusive/stealth. they give u a diode to install between vent louvers, so no one can see any signs of a detector around ur dash, just in case they pace ur speed & give u a citation despite having the best!

Sorry, bad choice of words. I know how it works. What I meant was: Does it work? Have you had laser experiences with it yet?

The worst thing he doesn't even need a fridge judging from the scenery outside and the temperature meter of the car...

My own xperience:It works from the front w/radar. Gave me lots of warning in advance of the police giving someone else a ticket in the oncoming lane on the highway.
Rear laser shifter activated by a lexus(?) or other laser guided cruise control. Upgradeable software on the web can update new foto radar intersections.
Friend has one installed on his Carrera 4s, saved his butt
2x already.
Make sure power wiring is on circuit 15 with the cig lighter.
The x6(& some X5s i'm told) battery suffers from too much electronic gadgets, accessories & urban traffic short trips restart draining. So the digital clock needs resetting frequently unless u trickle charge the battery once in a while. Go fiqure..$80,000 Cdn. & u have to plug in the battery!

No, that's no help. Valentine One works just fine against radar and costs a fraction of what the 9500ci does. The only thing that justifies the very high price of the 9500ci is if the device works against laser, and that means: Is its laser 'phase shifting' effective enough to confuse the laser gun at 1500 feet under most normal conditions? Rocky Mountain Radar makes several devices it claims confuse laser; every reputable test ever done says they are useless, but I have never seen any independednt tests of the 9500ci. Escort is a lot more credible than RMR, bit I still wouldn't pay that kind of money unless I had a lot of evidence that the outlay was justified. Here in Calgary, police laser has pretty much taken over from radar. One way to avoid tickets is to slow down. But let's be realistic here...

Yes. absolutely. Drive within speed limit=no tickets.
But...we have a need for speed from x2x...
Haven't had much personal xperience w/it on the interste.
I had it installed bcause mine is vermillion red, very noticeable.
I'll get my Carrera4s friend to confirm his xact xperience when he gets back from germany.
The headsup display/speed alert alarm on idrive can be quite effective in raising urawareness of speed, because the scenery out the window& the car's capabilities can be hypnotic.

That would be great, as long as he has experience against laser, not just radar. Thanks!

The curse here in Calgary is construction zones. We have a zillion of them. I have no problem slowing down around workers -- I think it is both stupid and selfish not to -- but the police are far more interested in revenue than in road safety so they tend to set up at the exit from the speed zones, right where everybody is returning to normal speed, or right at the start where people are slowing down but have not yet dropped all the way. Laser has to have a clear line of sight of 1,000 to 1,500 feet or there is insufficient distance for the gun to get a reading, so anything that claims to confuse it has to work effectively at that distance. But everything has to happen at electronic speeds as laser guns send 280 pulses each second, and any two of those in sequence can calculate the vehicle's speed. So the phase shifting device has to act within milliseconds of receipt of the first signal. It is that speed of calculation that makes ordinary detectors completely useless against laser and, unlike with radar, there is almost no 'scatter' from laser hitting the vehicle ahead of you, so nothing to trigger your detector until you get hit.

I suppose I could be charitable and say that the police set up at the entry and exit of construction zones because those are the only places where they have the requisite distance to use lidar, but everything else our local police do seems to be targeted at revenue generation rather than safety, so I don't see why laser use should be any different.

akraptor: They cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 installed depending on the vehicle. They have to be custom installed, hence "ci" in the model number. I don't get enough tickets to justify the cost, but I just hate knowing I am vulnerable to the whims of the police need for revenue.
