damaged trim
Went to get my car from the valet garage where I park and this is what I find. I guess the idiot valet must have grabbed the door by the trim. No idea how else this could have occurred. Sorry for the crappy pic.
Any guesses on how much it's going to cost to replace the driver side chrome trim?

Same thing happened to my x5 last week when it was left outside at BMW overnight. The dealer told me that someone must have tried to break into my car. The metal trim cant be bent by hand once its on the frame of the door.I suspect the same thing has happened to to you.

I think that is highly unlikely as it is parked in a valet garage with the driver's side window open and the key in it. I am willing to bet against you as far as the trim being bent while attached. There are NO scratch marks anywhere in the area either.
It does get moved around quite a bit to get other cars in and out so the driver's side door opens and closes frequently. They must have grabbed it by the trim to open/close it. Also who would try to break into one of these this way? The alarm would obviously go off. If you were going to try and get something out of the front seat you'd be better off just smashing the window and grabbing it.

The trim slides onto the metal door frame and wraps around to the inside of the door. Mine had little scraps on the inside. it looked like someone put something in there to pry it open.We tried to bend it back with pliers but had no luck so my dealer covered its repair since I had proof it happened on their property. I take pictures of my cars each time i drop it off at the dealer for service.
Perhaps in your case the bend occurred a different way then mine did..

I wonder if it might possibly have anything to do with the weather warming up causing it to expand.
