I spent some time in Munich on business a few years ago and it seemed that every other red compact car (Renault, Opel, Nissan, Fiat etc.) had replaced the original emblem with a Ferrari badge. These were completely stock cars. Thought it was pretty funny.

Quick defense for the X5. That's a X5 (4.6is).....2002-2003 model year. Now what you guys may not know is, when it was introduced it was designated as X5(M). Now I'm not sure if this particular owner knows this or not. My guess would be yes so the badge was added. And yes I'm speaking from experience. If I still had the paperwork I'd scan it and post it. If any of you guys get a chance to drive a 4.6is X5 take a drive and you'll understand why it has the designation it has. So this isn't really a "fake it to you make it" case. The downside is there's actually a full blown X5///M now. So I'll give this guy a pass. In fact I'll find out who it is...................Phil

While what you say is true, if it didn't come from the factory with it, why add it? The 4.6 and 4.8 X5s were monsters. Absolute beasts. But they came around at a time when BMW vowed they'd never make an ///M 7 or SAV ///M. Whether they're deserving of the badge or not, there's no excuse for an add-on and a vanity plate to match it all. Be proud of who you are and what you've got. Don't worry how other people see it. To them it's a BMW, to you it's a masterpiece.

Thank you! thats why I said that X5 deserves the badge, but he shouldn't have put one lol. The 4.6is is a really fun car to drive, and when I drove my friends new X5 4.8i, I felt mine was more powerful and more fun to drive.

here's my love:

I'll be honest, I'm glad you did, because I think most people didn't know that or even remember. But God, if I ever need an SUV, I've always said that I'm buying a 4.6is or 4.8is X5. Such beautiful beasts. Road hogs with sports car manners.

Actually, I always kind of wanted an X5 4.6iS. The car was ahead of it's time in many ways and can be considered the grandfather of the current X5 ///M.

Still dumb to get the plate though.

I have to say the funniest badge I've seen was on a 4.8i, one of the new X5's and it was such a fail honestly. The badge read "mX5" LOL I just couldn't stop laughing.

There's nothing super special about any X5, and it's an xdrive50 (not 5.0).

And it was the 4.6 that got me to notice the X5. Not many of those around, I still get excited when I seen one of those.

Sorry...disagree. No pass from me. The X5 4.6is is a great car, no doubt but the owner completely negated any credibility by adding an M badge. The only true M cars are those that roll off the assembly line with the badge.

That's actually an X5 4.6is. Closest thing to an X5M before they made the X5M.

The engine was tuned by Alpina and it had the same gauges as the E46 M3.

Precisely. From what I've heard from a couple early 02 owners, BMW mailed them letters that said, "Congratulations on your purchase of your X///M5". Still, I would never put M badges on my 4.6. Here's mine:
