OBD2 port and smog
The acura dealership I bought my 2013 X5M from forgot to smog check the car before they sold it to me 2 months ago, its a 2hr drive to the dealer so they offered to reimburse me if I get it smogged locally. Ive gone to two different smog places (they use the same model machine) and their machine cant communicate with the OBD2 port but if they connect a hand held diagnostic to the OBD2 port it communicated just fine, anyone else ever had this issue?

I am not sure this is the same thing or not.
Recently my neighbor went to smog and they said they couldn't read the VIN through the OBD2. Apparently the machine (not the handheld) was also trying to match up the VIN to the DMV database through the OBD2. Somehow the ECU wasn't communicating the VIN. So the smog people said they had to go back to the dealer and have a new ECU installed. And my neighbor promptly said screw that. The neighbor just went back another day to a different person and said please manually read my VIN and the new person was able to type it in the computer. So not sure if that's what you have going on or not. I saw on some of the forums this issue popping up here and there. |

Isn't the fix to take the ride back to the Acura dealer? They may have 'forgotten' to do the smog because they had the same issue trying to hookup that emissions had.
I have a 2011 X5 50i (and that may not help you) and my Maryland station communicated with mine just fine.

Yeah Im taking it back Saturday morning, in California its not even legal for a car dealership to sell a car without a smog check. Who knows what happened on their end. I did some research and a few people have had the same issue with their BMW's, usually when they have had some type of flash done to the car, one guy had a transmission flash done and had to flash the car back to stock for the OBD2 port to communicate with a smog machine.
I looked at their website the other day and noticed they have a 2013 M5 with 30K miles. I might test drive it and see if I like it enough to ask about a "trade-in"... |
