X5M engine temps?

Hi all,
I am starting to wonder if the PO of my 2010 X5M installed a low temp thermostat. My temp always sits a fair bit below 1/2 way on the gauge, and every other picture/ video I have seen they look to be right at 1/2.

Anyone that knows what thermostat they have and can verify where their gauge sits?

Sounds like this could have been a measure to preserve valve seals, as I generally prefer to leave stock temp units in modern vehicles, and let the ecu do what it expects to do.

Mine always warms up to just under 100 (half way) irrespective of ambient weather.

The X5m has a 105c thermostat, but it’s map controlled. So the ecu can open it sooner and my understanding is the x5m targets 95c. So it’s operating temp is lower than a standard bmw v8 103c-108c. this should help with valve stem seal longevity as heat cases the elsarisizers to evaporate more quickly out of seals chasing them to loose pliability and sealing. It’s a popular mod on the n62 to add a low temp thermostat to increase valve stem life. The normal n62/n63 has a 105c thermostat to improve fuel efficiency. I did it to my n62 add a 95c thermostat. Lots of threads on this mod.

There is no engine coolant temp gauge on my x5m that gauge is oil temp.

Don't look on oil temp gauge on dash, it lies. 100C on gauge is 115C on real. If you open ISTA-D diagnostics and look to oli temp, you see difference between gauge and sensor temp.

S63 work temp is 105C. It need 85C thermostat to lower work temp to normal 90C.

Well mine sits in the middle of 1/4 and 1/2 and I live in hot ass AZ when temps here hit 110 degrees easily. I was towing my 17ft camper and the highest it got going uphills was 1/2 during the towing

The PO could've installed a lower thermostat or a modified valve for the oil cooler. The modified valve doesn't reduce the flow of oil to the oil cooler.

I'm going to research the oil temp valve.

I use my X5M to tow a travel trailer. I noticed that frequently in Colorado my oil temps rose a lot, I belive to about 3/4's what is that about 270F.

I think these cars would benifit from lower operating temps. After replacing every oil seal on this engine....

Anyway the normal coolant temp is about 95C not sure if a lower temp thermostat will make a difference.. Yes they have 105C thermostats, but all of them are ECU controlled and the X5M works to keep the car at 95C.

The reason I was thinking of these was because of the horrendous heat and weather we have here in Bahrain. 125f and high humidity.
