Brakes? Obviously dependent on the type of mileage (highway vs. city), but I assume more often with the weight of the X5 M. Say every 50k miles?
Right side airbag on mine leaked at 70K+ miles, replaced both and lowered the truck with H&R 1.2" and now at 90k+ miles the bushings need to be replaced

I have a 2011 x5m and have had much better luck with it than my 2008 4.8i, which loved repai money even more then it loved gas...

Anyway prior to my ownership the following major repairs were done (under warranty)
Steering rack replacement due to leaking
Replace all fuel injectors

During my 1 year of ownership
Replaced engine partition (they all come apart)
Replaced all turbo coolant lines (negotiated as part of the purchase)
Replaced leaking turbo oil line and oil return block (quite expensive)
New battery (dead from bad alternator)
New alternator (dead at 44k)
New PCV vent line (they all fail)

Still leaking oil and gives burning smell, going back to the dealer today. Suspect a leaking rear main seal.

I do have an extended warranty. So out of pocket costs have been low.

Low mileage. Purchased the vehicle in March of 2017 with 41.5k miles. These ar the problems during my ownership. The previous owner replaced the injectors and steering rack, and I’m sure others.

Engine partition was done at 41.5k (every e70 x5 seems to have this issue)
New turbo coolant lines at 41.5k
Turbo oil lines and turbo oil line return block 44k miles for bad oil leak
Alternator dead at 44k, no warning just failed while driving back to Houston
Battery, replaced by me as it went completely dead due to the alternator and was old
PCV vent line 45k
New rft tire due to flat at 46k

I’ve also changed the oil
Did a coolant flush for the engine and turbos
Replaced brake fluid
Installed new oem brake pads (wow that was pricey), didn’t like the after market pads initial bite.

Right now it’s in for valve cover gaskets (had an oil burning smell). The dealer discovered the cause was bad valve cover gaskets that were “puking oil” so their getting replaced. 48k miles.

This is a 3rd car for us and it’s owned by my company so it mostly just sits in my company storage fully enclosed garage. So in 1 year I’ve driven it just under 7k miles. I purchased an extended warranty on the car so most repairs have been covered.

It is mostly used as my work vehicle and a tow vehicle.

Age is as hard on cars as mileage, especially on the polymers and elsastisizers in plastics and seals.

That warranty is really helping you out! Unfortunately, you have had some issues under 50k miles which others have not experienced (or failed to mention). Thanks for the comprehensive response.

Yes, it has is in my case.. I purchased an AutoNation 3yr/36K mile gold warranty with $100 deductibles.

So far its covered, Alternator, Turbo oil lines and turbo oil line block replacement, $3000 total cost. Then it just covered my leaking valve cover gaskets $1680, replacement. So for me the warranty has more than paid for itself with the $4680 so far in dealer warranty work.

The engine partition was negotiated on purchase (3 pieces) but I installed it myself, the Toyota dealer I purchased it from didn't want to mess with it. I just replaced the 4th piece which sits on the fire wall today ($90). The tire was bad luck (screw in sidewall) and was $470 to replace (OEM RFT on rear). The tank gas tank vent line that I just replaced was $80, I've paid $200 in warranty deductibles. I also paid $30 for the crapped out PCV vent line. I've also had to have the car towed $150 when the alternator died, and take a bus back to Austin $89 to pick up the car when it broke down. Then finally I spent $181 including taxes on a new AGM battery from Sams.

I would not say this X5M has been unreliable. Compared to my X5 4.8i its been reliable. My 4.8i was running me about 9K in repairs (mostly I did them myself) in 7 months.... Which is why I replaced it. Also the 4.8i had thousands more in needed work to fix bad valve stem seals, leaking front diff, leaking adaptive drive hoses, and I'm sure it would be in need of a coolant pipe or alternator bracket oil seal in the next year or two. Also the rear power hatch struts had stopped working, and the old 4.8i had a bad sun roof that wouldnt close from vent position (common issue).

136,567 miles. Mostly “normal” wear stuff. 3rd set of front breaks, second rear. Just put on 3 set of tires.

I have had problem with drivers side window “falling down”. In for 3rd time same thing
I do have a leak in the cam cover gasket which should be fixed tomarrow

Car is still solid, very little wind noise or noise.

Should note other then warranty work ( long ago) I have all my work done by a local shop that dosent add the “BMW Tax” to the bill.

Before the x5, I had a number of jeeps (GC)

Of the 50 odds cars I have owned, the X5 is the best I have ever had.

Back at the dealer again for me. Car had a horrible burning smell like plastic and was bad enough that when I tuned the car off and parked in the garage you could still smell burning the next morning,

Just under 49k miles, leaking rear main seal, being replaced with a new redesigned unit according to my service advisor
Leaking pcv vent lines, replacing all of them this time. I asked my advisor if they had upgraded vent lines that won’t turn crispy again in 3 years. He laughed...

I asked my service advisor with all of the oil leaks i keep having how come the car hasn’t run low on oil yet :-D

Seriously though lots of oil leaks and less than 50k miles.

Im looking to get a 12' X6 M which is at 138,000 km which works out to be roughly 86,000 miles? Gonna bring it to a local BMW shop for a PPI. If PPI is clean, then i will pull the trigger, hopefully down the road no major issues

Who has replaced the shock and struts on the X5M? I'm doing front bushings and ball joints, but am wondering about the shocks and struts. I'm at 140,000 miles on a 2010 (mostly high way). Had some inner edge tire wear so doing new bushings and ball joints before getting aligned, but curious about the shocks. The don't seem to have any leaks and haven't really noticed any ride issues.
