Electronics Gear Shift Replacement

Hello All,

The electronic transmission shifter in my father's X5M is acting up. Its been making the clicking sound (As if its going into park) while in motion, but not actually going into park and it no longer pops out of sport mode when the car is put into park automatically.

After trying two replacements he has had no luck... Does the replacement shifter have to be programmed/Coded to the truck?

My last ditch for him will be taking my shifter out (which i know works because i use it everyday) and putting that in his truck to see if its just the units he bought or if there is something else going on.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

At the bottom of the "replacement" instructions in the online BMW TIS...it mentions coding/programming. Click the link below to see it for yourself:

{here's some images from the TIS...click the link above for more details about the numbers etc you see in the pics}

AWESOME !!
My earlier searched failed to reveal this thread, this is almost the same as what I am experiencing. I couldn't believe no one else had posted with the same issue... Mine started with the "extra" noises, then eventually my sport/manual mode was locked out sometimes.

And QSilver7, thanks to you AGAIN for the quality info and link to procedure.
I've already taken it apart to the point that I can see how easy it would be to swap in the new one.

What I am wondering now is, if I were to replace this unit myself, would the new shifter be operable in the basic Drive mode so that I could drive it to the dealer for the necessary programming?
The upside is that I can get the unit online for $770, my club price at dealer is $955.

OP, can you chime in on what your dad's vehicle did with the replacement installed? Did it function in the basic modes prior to programming, just not sport/manual?
If you had it programmed, do you recall the cost?

There’s no programming needed.

Today, based on this thread, I installed a used shifter into my 2012 X5M. It doesn't work. Is everyone sure that coding isn't needed? My Foxwell NT-510 in live data mode shows pressing the park button, but I can't change gears. Thanks!

Is the used one from an X5m or x6m? I believe the regular won’t work.
