Sunroof Just Exploded!!
My wife was driving home the other day when all of a sudden she heard a loud bang like a gunshot. She pulled over and realized that the sunroof was shattered. Not thinking anything of it, we just naturally assumed that a rock bounced somewhere in the air hitting it. I contacted my insurance company and they said it would not be covered because a rock would have to travel more than 70mph in a downward direction in order for it to explode. They told me to contact BMW to have it covered under warranty as a manufactures defect. When I called my BMW dealer, they said it was not possible for the sunroof to just explode because it is tempered glass. The repair is going to be $4000 and I don't know who to believe and what to do. Can some one give me some advice? I noticed there are many threads with the same situation. Some won the battle with BMW, some didn't.

Well, just contacted BMW corporate and they are not going to do anything about this. They stress and make a firm stand that this is caused from a rock or rock salt on the road. As you can see by the stress crack on the hole that it points upwards. If it was a rock, wouldn't it point inwards toward the cabin?

Have also heard of this in the Audi world, as my neighbor's '13 S4 had its back window randomly shatter. In discussing with the dealer (who covered the repair), they mentioned exploding roofs on Q5s, I believe.

Just an update, my insurance company after a bit of reluctance agreed to cover the repair. I have since been in contact with the local news which ironically enough did a story a couple of years back on the same situation and again, BMW refused to pay for the repair. She stated this might be worthy of a follow up story. Not sure if you have seen this yet, but this is an interesting article: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?id=8026317 I hope this will never happen to any of you out there. It's a very terrifying and dangerous experience. Stay safe.

Good to hear man. If they do end up making a follow up story let us know so we can check it out. Would probably be a good thing to have on file. |
