Angry E70 BMW X5 Navigation issue - Please Help!

Hi all,
I have posted here a little bit before but had a E90 335 previosly and also have E60 550 as well right now on top of the X5

so i got the car in November of 2010 with 46k miles with CPO till 100K

car was perfect but 2 weeks into it i started having an issue with the Navigation.

here's what happens:

i start the car in the morning and my navigation screen is black
if i look hard i can see that everything is working (also can use the flashlight to point to it) but there is no light coming from it.

turn the car off and on and everything comes up 100% so i thought whatever
couple of days later, same thing, except it didnt turn on after couple on/offs so i took to a dealer

dealer looked said no issues gave back to me

did that 2 more times, on 3rd time they kept it and replaced the battery

3 days later same thing happens, --> dealer again!
this time they replaced the navigation computer hell yeah i am happy car has 49K and i get a brand new computer.

a week later same issue!!!! --> dealer again!!!
this time the car sits there for 5 days and i drive an X3 no issues found

a month passes issue again --> this time i drive to dealer with the issue in place!!! (no working screen) they are in shock!!!

the test the car whole day and nothing they find again.

advisor says, i will have to call the BMWNA tech in, i say sure do what you have to do but no more X3.

so now i am waiting on the tech so i can drop the car off again for about a week or so.


does anyone know what is going on? any advice? any recomendations?

what can i do i know i cant do Lemon since it wasnt new when i bought it, but seriosly its been there every month since november for at least 3 days on average.

i love the car but this is just annoying....

please help would really appreciate it

I think you might have a bad screen, try to get the dealer to replace it under warranty. Btw your ride needs an extension wheel arch to accomplish the look of the 214 wheels

yep got that replaced as well forgot to mention came with the Navi computer

Oh, and yeah i know about the arch extension, i am looking for it, don't wanna pay 304 for it.

Are you absolutely sure they replaced the navigation computer (CIC or CCC depending on year) and the screen ?

If they did that I would ask them to replace the cable that drives the display from computer to screen.

sounds like the lcd backlight is not turning on...

Did they replace the LCD + backlight? If so, the computer controlling the display is not turning on the backlight...

The LCD in the x5 is always active even when you switch the screen off. So the computer doesn't enable/disable the "backlight" as you say.

The dealer wouldn't replace "backlight". They would just replace the entire screen assembly. I would make sure they really did that. The part would be listed on your service receipt.

Perhaps you can ask them to install a set of wheel arches for cost since you've been having this monumental amount of trouble (hey -- asking for free can get rejected a lot, but 'I get a really good deal and you don't lose any money' is much more palatable). Get a discount on the part and labor should be at least cut in half -- that's not so helpful if you were planning to instal them yourself of course.

I had the same problem as you did but BMW was not able to find the cause. I did, however, found out how to get rid of this problem. ( at least for my x5.)

Try this...

Before you start the car, press the start/stop button once to activate the accessory mode then start the engine/car by pressing the start/stop button again and pressing the gas pedal. The nav screen should light up.

Let me know if this works.
