2400 mile trip in the X6M?
good evening Gents,
need some precautionary trip advise. I am heading to Southern Florida from Northern Illinois and wanted to drive my 2012 X6M (my trophy vehicle). This will be my longest trip since I bought it a year ago. Maintenance is up to date, soon after I bought it a installed 3" AR Catless Downpipes, Megan Muffler, and the Velos Tune. My 1st German vehicle, bought from a luxury multi-brand (non-BMW) dealership. It's pristine at 28K miles, runs flawlessly, and transmission shifts properly. I'm nervous about breaking down somewhere (akin to riding older Ducati's-wondering when/where you will break-down)? I will be traveling with my Automotive Scan Tool and Velos programmer just in case. My question(s) include: * what type of trouble codes will put the vehicle in "limp" mode? * what are the most common issues you've seen (sensor failures)? * what should I be concerned about? I understand there is some oil consumption, I'll be prepared (none so far after 8k miles). I am excited about the long trip, just nervous about breaking down somewhere and end up getting a $4k repair bill. So far it's been great, now the test. Your advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Al |

I wouldn't worry any more than if you were driving a Honda Accord. Although I recently had an engine warning with reduced power mode, it's rare. I'd take mine across the country. Nice to have some sort of towing plan from BMW or your insurance though.

I'm back 2012 X6M
Reporting back.
We had no issues, smooth trip. At approx. 2200 miles, oil level dropped a "tick", added 8-12 oz of oil to top off. Averaged 16.8 mpg for the ~2900 mile trip (AR Down pipes, Megan Muffler, Velos Tune). That's including some blasting off in M Mode. Almost all the time spent in non M mode. * High Beam Assistant is nice Overall it was a comfortable ride. I wish I could've had Updated Maps in Navi, DVD In Motion, and Internet access in the vehicle. I'll be looking into those soon. |

Glad you had no issues. Sad that you, the owner of a $100k+ German vehicle, had to worry about taking a relatively short trip to begin with. And I don't blame you, after reading up on these vehicles.
Yet sad just the same |

Is this thread for real? You have an very expensive premium vehicle and you worry about a long trip when the BMW's costing a third of this do hundred of thousands of Km's a year? Sorry to say it but get a grip and buy a boring Japanese car if you have an issue. Really....

PS: If the oil level drops a 'tick' doesn't mean you've got to rush to top it off immediately. As long as you're not under the minimum level you're fine to wait until your next service even if you're right at the minimum level.
