Velos vs. Dinan

Was looking at the Dinan Website.
The continuance of the 4/50 Warranty on a new car is very appealing.
Any comments regarding a comaprison of the tunes available?

Velos > dinan in terms of performance, cost, customer support, and etc

the only reason you would get dinan is because they give you a warranty, but velos, the tune is removable through the handheld flash unit, so just take it off before warranty work

Even if it is removed prior to service, can they detect if truck was flashed?

I was wondering this as well.

For the 50i, Dinan stage 1 adds 96hp, but Velos adds only 55hp.

The ideal is to remove the flash, and drive it for a bit on the stock flash to let the ECU relearn. Not 100% sure if it's detectable if they really look for it, but normally they won't notice since it is not something on the surface.

not sure about 50i, but for M, usually get stage 2, not sure what stage 1 is for, probably a less aggressive tune. Also all these said hp increase is not judged on the same base level with equal conditions testing, it is important to note where the gains are made and how effective it is in the rev range

Dinan always advertises crank horsepower compared to most other tuning companies that use wheel horsepower. I am going with active autowerke and can report back after it is tuned. In regards to the dealership seeing the flash I have been told that they modify the existing "version" of the software so as long as you return to stock you will be fine. However, there is a black box that BMW corporate only has access to that stores all data on the car such as high rpms or boost. Dealerships can't see that. This is all stuff that I have been told. I am certainly looking forward to tuning my truck this weekend.

I have owned both tunes and currently in the X5M is Velos. Velos is far more aggressive and puts down way more power from my butt dyno. A lot more mid range and upper RPM power. Dinan has a bit more grunt down in the lower gears.

As far as service and reliability, you can never go wrong with Dinan. There is a reason the BMW and Dinan are paired in this manner. Customer service from Dinan and my dealer has always been first class and top notch. From a BMW tuner standpoint, DINAN and ESS are the best in the business by far.

Velos is a good little company and they are growing. Certainly areas for improvement. But that is life and business. I have been happy for the most part with them. Bought a BBK from them and wheels for the X5M.

As for noticing a tune if anything were to go wrong with the engine and it needed to be sent out to BMW yes they would notice a change in the DME. It would be that way for any company. The difference is for Dinan, they are a much larger organization. A lot more R&D and investment goes into their products. They have a better direct line of communication with BMW than a smaller shop like Velos would. Meaning they get info on DMEs, tuning, engineering, etc. ahead of time than other tuners would from BMW.

With that being said, if your engine were to blow up from a Dinan tune opposed to a Velos tune. Dinan has a lot more financial reserves in compensating you if that were to happen. If Velos or BPM for example had this issue, there is very little hope for the buyer that the company could pay because its a ton of money.

Velos tune has been very reliable and safe. So you will not run into this problem.

Your 3 best options are ESS, Dinan and VELOS. I would stay away from VF. Their SC destroyed my M3 and their service is terrible. Their software development is extremely concerning and I would never have my worst enemy put their products in their car.

The dealership would not be able to tell but to my understanding if you have a major issue with your car and data needs to be sent to BMW NA (very rare) to be reviewed then they would be able to see if the car was tuned and can deny warranty work. Dinan is a great tune and all you really need to decide is whether or not the warranty is important to you, I will say that I will be switching over to Velos at some point because I want to run downpipes which is not available through dinan currently. I'd argue that the customer service of dinan is best only becuase when something goes wrong they'll pick up the tab unlike any other tuner

side note: Velos was very prompt in responding to emails in the times I've communicated with them.

Cool - let us know how it goes.

I believe Velos is quoting crank HP as well since they state a max hp level of 455 (up from 400 for the 50i).

Just keep in mind that Dinan only covers the initial factory 4/50k warranty, and does not go into any extended gold/platinum coverage plans.

I have the Dinan tune on my X5M and wouldn't even consider anyone else.

I'm a Dinan advocate through and through!! But, the velos is the biggest bang for your buck as far as tunes go on the market for the M model.

Here is a quick snap just how loyal a Dinan guy I am. I will say that I will not be swapping my Velos for anything else and I have had the Dinan and ESS in my X5M. All are great tunes and wake the M up. It all depends on what you want and how much power and more aggressive tuning you want.

May I ask who did the tune?
What was the process?

I took mine to the local BMW dealer. They are Dinan authorized. Took them couple of hours.

My Dinan authorized BMW dealer. They also did the Dinan suspension and exhaust. No worries with Dinan. Everyone else....questionable.

Edited to what you really wanted to say.

There are a lot of other companies that do very well, and are great at customer service. However, there are only less than a handful (Dinan included) that support the factory warranty...

Not what I was saying. Not cool to edit my original post. Don't care either way.

My X5M carries the velos tune with Dinan suspension and exhaust. Service, quality and engineering are top notch. I will say again though, if you are looking for a lot more power and a more aggressive tune Velos is on the top as far as my butt dyno is concerned.

I don't care about the dyno and graphs and how much power one is putting down on paper than the other. It's about feel from the drivers seat. All three of the major tuners for this SUV (Velos, Dinan and ESS) are all amazing tunes. Just depends in what you want.

I was wondering when Omar was going to chime in on the thread.
It's only a matter of time before I grow some balls and get a Velos tune.
