X5m rims shipping question

Hi guys ,

I am planning to buy these rims from someone on forum for 1000$

They want to split the cost of shipping and do not want to take the responsibility of damage in shipping

Also asking for the payment before delivery? What’s the rule of thumb here ?

Is it worth taking the risk . Also they are saying it’s oem 2010 rim and not being used at all, why were they holding it ok for so long.. any thoughts

My only "rule" has been does this seem/feel legit and is the communication appropriate?
I've bought and sold a lot of stuff via forums like this one without issues.

I have only done deals where items are prepaid. Regardless of shipping company, they'll offer added insurance coverage assuming you pay extra (e.g. USPS was $1/100 of coverage over $500 for $1500 in Lotus parts I sold and shipped last week).

Key thing for me with yours are pics of the inside with oem casting/mold stamping to confirm what otherwise seems obvious from the pics. Similar to what you are considering, I just bought years old, oem, new rims last fall via eBay. Some times these sit around for just in case circumstances or in a vendor's display case.

I personally don't place any added value on "never used" because "like new" is all I'll need once a tire is mounted. So... the deal seems reasonable to me, but that's just my $0.02.

Good luck regardless.

Brand new 2010 rims are possible, but raises a flag for me. Ask where they've been. Also ask if they've been refinished, and if so, powder coated or painted. Painted may end up peeling so ask plenty of questions about the process used. Good luck.

OP quoted "they're not being used at all" ie surplus to requirements, not new. Not everyone sells their factory rims when they upgrade to aftermarket, for various reasons including keeping a spare set for emergency or running winter tyres.
Sellers conditions are completely reasonable, and even generous to split shipping.

I was incorrect when I said not used at all , they said it was used for only 20 miles

Use PayPal (“paying for goods” option, will cost 3% more). Buy shipping insurance. You should be fine.

And whatever you do, don't use Zelle or Venmo. Bitcoin is up to you...

Any reason about not using Zelle ? I put up this question about where the rims were kept and this was his response

“Buddy, it is 2010 and I have been wanted to use them as winter wheel set up for my X5 M but I sold it but never put my winter set up..... please if you have more questions, please ask on the forum itself. Thank you.”

They are not a merchant but a regular forum guy . PayPal is as good as handing over cash in a peer to peer transaction

Basically Zelle & Venmo offer no fraud protection because it's hard for those services to prove which party is committing it. So unless you know the other party well, you could be SOL. I'd stick with PayPal using a CC because the bank has your back in most cases... https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/16/ze...ud-protection/

Shipping insurance is your best bet. As mentioned before, PayPal gives you buyer protection if you select the pay for goods and services option. Don't ever send as a gift (in PayPal) or directly from your bank account.

FYI, this site has helpful information on packaging and shipping wheels. http://www.howtoshipwheels.com/

I recently shipped oem wheels from my Z3M and used the company on the site to setup shipping. Shipping 4 wheels in two boxes was around $90. I used NEX shipping twice and both times the carrier used was FedEx.

You should reply: "Don't call me buddy, pal!"
...
Unless your name is actually Buddy... then call your parents and scream at them.

The wheels were shipped to ground TN. (around 5-7 days) I just checked and it was 104lbs and the cost was $87.
I also shipped a custom hitch to GA. (around 5ft long) 39lbs and shipping cost $40

They do look like the wheels which came on my 2011 X5

I have bought after market wheels on E Bay

They arrived well and on time. The seller paid the shipping .

I have also bought brand new wheels online before for another car and never used them as I later sold my car.

So it can happen that a person never uses the new wheels they buy.
