Get the GTI.

With a few minor mods, it's out-perform the 330i. Sure the BMW is probably more reliable, but the VW is cheaper to own/maintain, insurance will probably be less, and has a fun tossability to it that the 330i doesn't.

Have you also considered a used Mini Cooper S?

Insurance is a bit more on the GTI, $200 extra per 6 months, but I don't mind that. My friend has a Cooper S, I don't know how great the automatic transmission on it is, but he has a manual and it's an O.K. car. Just not my style.

+1

Look at the age group of each car:

330i - Some young people, mostly people in their mid 20s and 30s. Now the 335i is more of a car a younger person would desire.

GTI - Teens to mid 20s. Reason: more of a "raw" car than the E90. Faster, funner, takes turns like no other FWD.

Wouldn't spend more than $20 000 on a FF car...

And the driving experience....can't even compare...

I was thinking about that, but it's a bit more expensive and I heard stock for stock a GTI will take it because the A3 is heavier. In terms of looks though I'd take the A3.

Until you throw on some blacklines, a CF spoiler lip and an M-Sport kit.
