Ya, I had the M View on my M5 as well. As you know, the way BMW renders the HUD tach doesn't provide much info unless you're approaching redline, and as you say, you give up a lot of other info. I didn't find it view particularly helpful and always used the standard view.

I prefer the Audi's. The google earth maps load quickly and are very high res. People comment on it in my car. Then I show it to them in the virtual cockpit and they're blown away. The Nvidia GPU's makes it all snappy. I just got rid of a 335 and found the idrive to be ok. I test drove a new X5 before the Audi and while it was nicer than the 335's idrive it didn't compare to the Audi. Just my opinion.

Then just turn yours off, that's always an option. The rest of us like it a lot. It's particularly useful on track, which is why BMW chose to give us both normal view and M view for the HUD on the M3/M4.

I particularly like the speed limit info being displayed along with your current speed. It was particularly useful in Euro because the speed limit changes back and forth so quickly. During our group Euro Delivery last May, with 10 M2s, 2 M3s, and 2 M4s, many of the M2 drivers got speeding tickets, but the M3s and M4s with HUD and speed limit info display didn't.

You're going to be disappointed. HUD turn signals are not able to be coded on the F3x and F8x platform.

Mercedes needs to overhaul their system. I know this is irrelevant when it comes to functionality but their choice of fonts offends me. They seems to have chosen Arial Italics and called it a day without any thought. BMW is best in this regard followed closely by Audi. Please excuse the font nerd in me.

Most people who have daily driven with one love it. I wish the F30 had more features on the HUD. It has lost of potential

You can configure the M View to the M1 and M2 buttons in the F8x which is super convenient

I tried programming turn signals in my X5 HUD, and it didn't work. Haven't tried it in my X6M yet.

The new idrive is fantastic and the voice recognition is Google/Siri quality. I love how I can interrupt it and it will listen to my interruption.

Apple car play doesn't have enough apps for me to use it yet, so I'm still using the BMW Connected apps until car play gets better.

The M View on my X5 M is really badly designed: a thin curved RPM bar of low contrast in a display otherwise full with vivid but uninformative colors... maybe good looking on a Christmas Tree, but quite useless for fast driving.

It should be redesigned from ground zero - and the new version made available to current owners.

I totally agree with this video!
BMW and Audi are on the top here.

Been test driving both 2018 Audi's and BMW's. The Audi virtual cockpit is brilliant. BMW will follow up with their own, but for now they are behind.
