I don't get that many flats, but I do get enough to make me want to carry a spare tire, especially with all that I've seen and experienced with some of these so called "roadside assistance" services. I know it's a weird thing to base a car buying decision on (but it's not the only thing). However, I have seen my fair share of tire issues where it's important enough to be one of the things on my list as part of my buying decision.

Just buy a wheel yourself and put it in the trunk, when you go on long trips. How hard can it be? Even better just buy a donut...

See post #6 - But it may have to come down to this. If I have to strap a spare to the trunk, then that would push me into a larger "boat" to accommodate the spare, which is what I'm trying to avoid at the moment.

I was hoping for suggestions (something that I may have overlooked for whatever reasons) with a spare. Apparently, all the manufacturers did took out the spare on all things fun - waves of the future, I guess

Couldn't you also get a roof rack with a cargo box to address the lack of storage with a spare? Instead of limiting your choices so much for the fraction of the time you'll be on road trips?

Good and valid points. This has crossed my mind. I had even thought about rigging a wheel/tire carrier on the roof of my MCoupe

I can get a roof rack/cargo box for the trips, but then I would be needing a place to store the cargo box and spare tire for the remainder of the time that I won't be on road trips. Also, the higher center of gravity (CG) of the roof rack/cargo box filled with cargo would defeats the purpose of getting a fun sport sedan for these road trips - imagine trying to canyon carve with a heavy box on top

I ran a roof rack on my M Coupe most of the time. Not for and wheels, but worth noting that nearly all cars have a 160 pound limit, including the weight of the rack. Not my MC, just shown since it had a surplus of "spares."

I bought a GTI yesterday, honestly haven't looked to see if it has a spare or not. The Mazda 3 it replaced only had a donut, a solution I'd just as soon avoid.

But all you're looking for is a solution to the spare tire space problem. Which means you should either be able to just put the spare up there (thus resulting in the same empty trunk you had before) or something that's lighter but takes up a similar amount of space (clothes, a tent, whatever).

If you think about it, the difference between the C/F roof E92 and a sunroof one is about 40lbs+ at the top of the car. A compact spare weighs about that much, a it's not crazy even to have the spare up there. But surely you can stash lighter luggage up there than the spare itself.

Just be prepared for comically bad mileage. Just running a roof rack and two empty bike trays took mileage from high 20s to low 20s and adding two bikes took it into the teens on the highway, not exactly fun with a 13 gallon tank in the M Coupe.

This comment about a full spare tire really sticks with me. So I started thinking about all of the available cars on the market with your requirements and only one specifically has a spare tire option.

And it's a gem. It's Australian. It has a V-8 and is available with an optional manual transmission.

The G30 can be had with a spare. It starts just over $50K new but there will be used examples below that. You can jerry rig a spare on the F30 and get a 335 or 340 in that price range new.

Best bang for your buck is gonna be the Chevrolet SS, you can get it for less than 50k brand new(or 25k a few years old), lot of space vette engine and surprisingly good handling.

You could also get a used CTSV, ISF or e92 m3 in good condition for well under 50k, all really fun RWD v8 sedans.

On the AWD side you have used RS4's, S4's, new S3's, Golf R and STI's.

I'd check a c43 instead a lot more car than the CLA.

You couldn't just spend $400 or whatever on a spare wheel and tire for road trips? Realize it takes up a lot of space in the trunk but would open up a lot of options for you.

It's not about spend $400 or whatever on a spare wheel, I will happily pay that if the car has the wheel well to stow it or made that an option. It's more about losing space and figure out a way to strap it down. There are lots of other little details to think about that people often neglect. For example, if the car comes with staggered set up, I would need to find a wheel that will clear the front brakes with an offset that will work for both front and rear that has the right hub size and lug pattern. I can't simply buy a front or rear wheel as that will fit one axle, but may not the other.

All fair points. For those of us who run winter and summer wheels it's not an issue always 4 extra laying around to use in a pinch.

As an aussie i will add some context.

Positives:

- Holden engineers did a remarkable job in regards to ride/handling for such a big car despite a miniscule budget
- Acres of space
- Includes a spare
- plenty of power

Negatives:
- Tamed down looks compared to homegrown model
- Old design, it's an 8 year old car
- interior can be a bit meh

What you need is HSV, see post above, but alas.
