Is this legit?

I listed my X5 on cragislist last night. Someone texted me today saying they want the car but can't come see it personally due to being in the military at a camp and unable to get away. It is supposedly a gift for their father. They requested my paypal email to pay for the car. I sent a request through paypal for my asking amount to the cell phone number the texts came from. I am assuming that if this is bs it will just be ignored. I won't be held liable fro paypal for anything if this turns out to be bogus will I?
Anyone ever been here before?

That's what I was figuring. I can't be held liable for anything through Paypal just for requesting money from that person though can I?

Don't deal with anyone who cannot show up locally to see the car. Had many similar stories with my E60 sale. You may know this but even if you get paid with a cashiers check, call the issuing bank and ensure that the instrument is funded. Been a lot of car sale fraud in FL recently with forged cashiers checks. Your bank would not know it was forged till after the supposed issuing bank returns it unpaid at which point your car is long gone.

Also, don't take Paypal.

Oh absolutely regarding a cashiers check. Until the check clears the car and title stay with me.
Why no paypal though? I thought you were well protected using them.

This paypal scam is happening with more regularity. Merely because your account shows a deposit of 30K or whatever doesn't mean anything. What happens is that the scammer tricks paypal into releasing into your account the agreed upon funds. However when the scammer (who typically asks for your title and has someone pickup the truck within 24 hours)turns out not to have the fund, Paypal will alert your bank that you shouldn't have the funds. Your bank and Paypal then reverses the amount from your account.

I have. I sent a request for funds via Paypal after confirming with them that I cannot be held liable if this is bogus. I also told him that after speaking with my bank no title or car will be released for a minimum of 5 business days after the money has been sent to be sure it's legit. I haven't heard back lol.

This happened to me a few years ago. My buyer was a marine engineer, that was stuck on the boat. Wanted to surprise his son with the car, and couldn't talk as he had no cell service. Was trying to do the deal over email, and through PayPal. It was a new one to me, but I googled it and found several similar examples.

It all came to an abrupt end last night. He "transferred" money through paypal including an extra 2 grand that I was supposed to transfer to western union to set up shipping and after that was done the funds would be released into my account. Any real Paypal deal will never involve sending money to another money transferring company. I called paypal, forwarded all communications from him to them and sent him a reply text along the lines of being lower than scum and to get a real job and quit trying to scam decent people.
I should have found out at the beginning he was a douche. In his first text he told me he was a SERE instructor for the military and had limited cell phone access. Well I have been through SERE so I should have prodded him more about this and exposed him as a fraud from the beginning.

That 2000$ wired over WU would have been the pay to the scammer.
Here's what happened to my relative:
Car posted for sale on craigslist, the scammer buyer replies and wants to buy the car, but he's "out of the area". The buyer sends a check with "extra" several hundred dollars for shipping cost to ship the car to another state. The seller goes to cash the check. Shortly after (while the check is still clearing), the buyer contacts the seller with a sob story, i.e. "my sister died and I need the money for the funeral, let's cancel the sale and can I have my money wired back to me". The seller feels very sorry and wires his real money (the same amount in the check which the seller just deposited to his account and thinks he has) to the scammer. Of course, the check doesn't clear the bank, but the wire is instant.
In the case of my relative, cops showed up at the bank when he was trying to cash the check. Luckily for him, he hasn't wired his real money back to the seller, he was at the stage of cashing the check.

Crazy. Definitely gotta be careful out there. I won't even attempt a deal if it's not face to face anymore.

Even face to face you have to be extremely careful.

I always meet a person in a bank where there is CCTV. Will only do the test drive with 1-person.

Once the deal is made I do not touch the cash (if paying cash). I escort them into my bank, they hand the $ to the teller & deposit into account. If there are fake bills you are insured by bank.

Cashiers check & other forms of payment have their unique risk as well.

Very true. I will definitely be taking a bit of a loss by doing this, but I think it will be safer by just selling it to a local dealer. At least then I know the deal is legit. I think it's worth a couple grand to me to avoid potential issues like this. Such a shame what the world has come to. What ever happened to making a deal, shaking on it and holding up your end?

It's fraud man, any big sale like this u wanna look these ppl in the eye and shake their hand before you hand over the keys. Theres too many scammers out there, and i'd tell them to bring the cash. That's the only way I will let the car go lol

This is a known scam, I put my car for sale on CL and got at least 5 such texts. At the end I ended up putting some text to say "Don't bother asking me for PayPal information and telling me about your overseas job or telling me that you will pay me more than the asking price, I'M ON TO YOU SUCKER !' lol

I am a sincere honest guy. Integrity is a value I hold dear. Unfortunately, many people don't share my outlook there. Sad world we live in indeed. Thanks for your input though.
