'11 X5M or Jeep SRT8

I've always wanted an x5m and each time I back away and buy American. I've owned a '13 srt8 jeep and recently sold it, why I'm not sure, but back in the market for a performance suv. My local dealer has an '11 x5m with 36k miles and it's priced good but warranty is about to expire. I drove it and liked it but it's so smooth and quiet compared to jeep.

Bmw platiinum Warranty extension to 84 mo and 100k miles is around $7k.. Is there much margin for the dealer to negotiate or is that cost set by Bmw ? Is there another warranty option worth considering?

What are some of the big ticket repairs that most owners face ?

Well you can say the BMW is american made (or assembled). That might help you lol! Maybe not much negotiating room with the warranty but sometimes that will help knock down your interest rate with the banks if you add that on. It did with my car.

Go with the warranty and then enjoy a worry free ownership experience. Not sure if that price is negotiable, these trucks have proven to be very reliable. Nothing major in my 3+ years of ownership. The x5m is a big step up from the srt8 in all aspects. Love the 6.4 hemi (i'm a mopar guy) but the x5m can run circles around that jeep. If you want to go a cheaper route with some character, strap a blower onto that jeep and you'l have something special but you lose the warranty etc.. If you want piece of mind and bmw ownership go for the M + warranty and call it a day! You can easily get away with having a tune and stay in warranty too, should bump you up to 620hp with a ecu flash. If you want more sound add an exhaust and downpipes, they sound pretty tame stock but absolute beasts with catless downpipes+exhaust

Warranty is negotiable to some extent. Often though if you can't get better than MSRP at time of purchase, just shop around, you can often get 10% off without trying, buying elsewhere. You can buy the warranty at any point, from any dealer; before the warranty runs out.

I recommend Jeff @ Passport BMW, which I think is in Maryland. You can just call and ask for him. Tell him how you were referred. He likes to hear about that.

Dinan won't if you get it done at a dealership that is Dinan certified. Can add about 60hp.

Dinan will step in during the 4 year 50k factory warranty but not on extended BMW or 3rd party warranty.

+1

waste of money if you are not buying the car new. I actually had the dinan tune previously, tuned at 500 miles then switched over to velos as I'm now at 48k miles and soon to be out of factory warranty. It was a great tune but it is the weakest one out there so that they don't have to shell out money in the small chance something fails mechanically.

OP if you get a tune with a hand held flasher you can flash back to stock yourself through the obd port and take it in for services. Unless there is a catastrophic failure where you need to get in contact with BMW NA headquarters there is no reason to worry.. There are many running velos on here with no issues. It helps to have a good relationship with your service advisor also, they won't throw you under the bus in case something does go wrong

7k?????? please no.

These trucks are pretty reliable. I've had five x5s, starting with my 4.4 in 2000. Pushed 4 of the 5 past 110K and haven't had 7K combined in non-maintence repairs past their original 50K warranty.

Pass on the warranty, get the truck, and enjoy.

If the trucks have proven to be reliable why blow 7 Grand on a extended warranty? 7K seems very high. You think the dealer wants will honor the warranty if he throws in a tune and downpipes on a potentially catastrophic breakdown?

pass, pass, pass on the warranty. There's a reason they offer these, they're cashing in big time.

Margin is $750 on BMW's extended warranty across the board.

Why won't the dealer CPO the car?

FWIW....months ago there was an X5M on this board for sale in Chicago. It was for sale because....the owner traded it for an SRT8. He hasn't looked back.

Interesting responses.. I'm all ears.

The jeep is slower but it feels and sounds much faster downside is that the jeep is so hard to mod because of fueling challenges w ecu, plenty of turbo and SC applications just limited on getting them fed

Not sure about reliable ...fuel injectors and vacuum pumps are known issues ... The injectors alone are 8k vacuum pump another 2.5k

I believe injectors were fixed beginning in 2012

I just bought a cpo 2011 x5m with 15k miles but got every available document on the car and the 7 year 100k bmw service contract shows $4995.00 msrp in my paperwork, though clearly I did not pursue that since mine was already cpo.

Not sure where the 7k is coming from. I can upload my doc if it will help.

Depending on the in service date at that mileage he could still get the injectors or vacuum pump replaced under warranty if they haven't been addressed already.

You'll notice the disclaimers about the service contract MSRP, but 2k difference seems high.

My feeling is if all the analytics aren't much different, just go with what you like best.

It will be your truck afterall.

I would not own this car out of warranty but thats just me. When stuff DOES go wrong its not cheap, the warranty gives you piece of mind and will likely pay itself off with one big ticket repair. Part of buying a used car means you have no clue how the previous owner treated it... If I were buying used i'd spring 7k for a warranty, you're already saving 35k+ buying it used! Skip the downpipes if you want to play it safe, I've been doing the tuned car game for a while. Its not hard to work around that.

The other way to look at it is you're saving money by going used so you could just swallow what ever repairs come along the way. Different strokes for different folks..

All that said, I will most likely be selling the car within a year. Just want to enjoy the new power for a little while and then move onto an rs7. 50k+ miles is when things start going wrong and I'm approaching that mark soon, i'll let the next owner deal with those potential issues

Agree, I think half of it is not having to deal with the anxiety of the "what if".

For me, I'll roll the dice.
