considering x6 over x5, some inputs please!!
Hi all,
It's the first time posting in X6 forum. I have 135 as my daily commuter and my wife drives X5 4.4i (2005). Obviously x5 is a family car for a long distance trip. I know X5 is a SUV with nice handling but I don't get a big smile on my face like 135. Anyway, it's about time to renew our old x5 for my wife and I am debating between x5 and x6 because my wife. When I first saw X6, I thought "why would you pay more to have less space?" "I don't see the point of x6 over x5." Now i realized that X6 is not x5 with less space but it is rather a BIG coupe with MORE space. Then I thought about our usage of the current x5. We hardly used the full cargo space up to the ceiling even with 2 toddlers. Then my wife offered me a very interesting proposition when she found out that I started to like x6. She suggested me to get x6 for me and would take my 135 even though my 135 has manual trans because she does not like driving a big car. She hasn't been driving manual for a while but she used to. She feels little uncomfortable driving a manual but she hates a big car more than a manual. I argued that she should have X5/6 since she takes kids more than I do (about 3:2). But her counter-argument is that she only drives in a city (local streets) and my commute is about 40 miles in highway so I should have a bigger/safer car. I take my kids to school in my 135 (a short distance) and they are happy in there. To tell you the truth, I am very tempted with this proposition as X6 is very rare and everyone says that it is nothing like typical SUV or even x5. But, I am worried that I am going to miss my 1 too much. What am I going to lose if I take this offer from my wife? I saw a few forum member moved from 1 or 3 series to X6. Any input? I will be testdriving x6 over this weekend but I would like to hear from others, too. |

I'm doing the same thing. '08 335xi to '12 X6. I'm going with the 35i mainly due to cost. I'm a little nervous about it though because my dealership only has one X6 in stock and it is a 50i so that is what I test drove. Worried I'll be missing the power as I drive off in my new 35i. :/

I dont know if i could explain this simply, but 35i and 50i is the same as 335i vs 328i
But i guess this comparison is good if you drove those two I also used to have FX35 and 45 (V6 vs V8) The unfortunate part was that 45 was first and 35 was bought as a raplacement to 45 Man, i hated it! I would highly recomend test driving 35i, especially if you already tested 50i You may miss that V8 power, specifically on freeway After all, it's 100Hp difference |

I've owned an FX35 as well. Loved the VQ.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...9&postcount=18 Also love my 335 (3 tickets to prove it). X6 will bring me back to a crossover and I'm excited about it. It would have been nice to have one this winter in NJ. The 19s on 335 didn't give me any comfort on snow covered roads. I'm just concerned about missing the power. I can't justify the cost increase to move up to the 50i though. I only put 7000-8000 miles a yr on my car. I enjoy the hell out of it when I'm driving but the rest of the time it sits in the garage. Even after testing the 50i. I felt 'looser' in my 335 driving home. I think its due to a lot of facts including the lighter car, smaller form factor, tighter turning radius, etc. Sitting in the X6 for the first time I was actually surprised how high the driver sits. Doesn't appear to be that high form the outside. Either way, the X6 is a beast and I can't wait to own one. Sorry to jack the thread. Didn't mean to turn the X5 vs X6 debate into a 35i vs 50i debate.

Nice looking car. I like a black color but am not diligent enough to keep it clean without any swirl marks. Any mods to it? I had Dinan suspension on my old 330xi. I loved it because xi did not get any special sport suspension even with SP.
I drive x5 over the weekend with my family so I am used to the high sitting position. I certainly do not like x5 vs x6 or 35i vs 50i type argument. But I have to admit that it makes me wonder. I don't think that I have an access to 50i to testdrive right now. It may be a good thing. This is why I am avoiding to test drive M cars. I think that I would get 35i and may add Dinan software upgrade for extra 50-70hp. Well, at least 135 will stay in my garage for a few more years and will be able to drive it. But I will hate to see it covered with cookie crumbs etc. |

Yes, black (BSM) is hard to keep clean. She's dirty in the pic above. I'm going with Monaco Blue/Saddle Brown for the X6.
335 mods were: blackline tail lights smoked led sidemarkers wheels(all pictured above) (later changed to Style 269 OEM BMW Performance rims) blacked out BSM grille euro rear fog switch sunglass holder V1 hardwire dark burl walnut shifter CF Roundels plus some others -pm me if you want to discuss more.

Just about to make a similar swap myself (1 series 123d M-sport coupe for a X6 35D Dynamic).
The 123D coupe is suprisingly fast due to the slug of torque and the high reving (for a diesel) engine so it has a very wide powerband. The figures for the X6 35D suggest more of the same so hopeing I wont feel short changed in straight line speed. As to the the twistys the M-sport suspension was a touch underdamped/sprung for the roads round my way (twisty, bumpy with lots of elevation changes moorland roads) so hope the extra travel of the x6 will make up for the nimbleness of the 1 (it was often rebounding off the bumpstops at the rear when pressing on).. picking it up next week if all goes well. |

For TheJackel.....get the 5.0! You will regret getting the 3.5 If you drove the 5.0 and end up with 3.5, you will be disappointed. A whole different ride and power under the hood. I had the X6 3.5...and within 6 months I advertised my lease and someone took it over....I then got the X6 5.0 ! Never stopped smiling since!

I envy you the choice of petrol V8 , back here in blighty its financial suicide to buy a big petrol SUV/SAV these days . Thankfully BM have developed a nice line in sporty diesel engines for those that have to suffer them.
I used to run a RRS SC 4.2 but the 11mpg ave (imperial gallon) was bit nasty on longer runs. PS since late ~2005 MY our road tax (yearly renewal required) has been a bit steep for higher emission stuff too. |
