burning oil smell in cabin

I've got a 2001 X5 4.4 with a burning oil smell that is coming from the AC vents. The dealer told me the valve cover gaskets were leaking & replaced them, but the smell persists. Any ideas?

Be very careful of any burning smells in the cabin. I read way too many accounts of X5's catching on fire. My E70 is starting to worry me. But my E53 was great.

Did you change the cabin air filter?

My 2007 E70 has the same problem. I can see the smoke coming through the vents into the cabin. Any body know any solutions?
I had my cabin air filter changed and it is still happening. Oil levels are fine.

The problem is not with your air filter. The problem is with your engine valve cover gasket. All you have to do is replace it and the problem will go away. It is not a difficult procedure on E70. Had the same problem with my E70. When I took the old gasket out of the cover, it was cracking in every place. In other words instead of feeling like rubber, it was like plastic.
