Totally agree with X5 comments. I would rule out the 5.0 and X5M powerplants though. Otherwise spot on. This is my first and last X5. Funny I don't hear complains from X6 owners and they both made at the same plant.

I leased my last 2 BMW's all I heard was horror stories, I have never had a problem, but it is a factor in why I lease vs buy. I bought my wife an MDX, and will buy her another one soon.
As a BMW fan, I take the good with the bad, I just do not like Mercs, and do not like the drivability of Audi. BMW has me as a customer, but I realize there are downsides to the product. |

On our second E70 X5 with about 40k miles racked up so far. Touch wood hardly anything has gone wrong with it apart from one cracked rim - which is more a function of the sub-standard roads around our place rather than BMWs fault.
The cars get a very hard life with three kids and two dogs - they have been fantastic to drive and own and the new one with the 8 speed box and 306bhp engine is quite something. Couldn't recommend them highly enough. |

But if you read this forum there is hardly any posting of any major issue. A creak coming from a plastic trim piece makes the car something to avoid? My diesel X5 feels so strong that I will not be trading in at the 3 year mark (a first for me for 15 years). I see no reason why I can't keep this car for 10 years if I wanted to. [Yes I did have some plastic trim creaks but I think I have got them]. The only wear and tear item that is expensive is tyres - no suprise given the size and width chosen. Totally DISAGREE with the assessment.

Have had our 2007 for over 5 years now with only about 40k on the dial, but the cars been great. Some initial hiccups (first 3 mos of ownership) and did have the interior trim on the glovebox come off, but other than that been real solid and a great family hauler with a bit of soul. Best driving SUV outside of Porsche around and will keep it for awhile.

Good, keep the cost down and we will keep buying them, we are on our second. We now have a diseil, it almost pulls off the line when you strp on the pedel like my 335i (well not really, but it has a lot more torque than I expected).
