Tire wear
I picked up my 2012 x5d with 740 miles on it. It has the 20 inch Dunlop run flats on it. I noticed the tread depth is 7/32 in the front and 8/32 in the rear. Does anyone know the original tread depth or am I in for very short tire life?

Fronts--9/32" Rears--10/32" I have <9k miles and hope to get a few thousand more miles. They are cupping like crazy and getting ever so close to the wear bars

That sounds like extremely excessive tire wear to me. These aren't motorcycle tires and should last 10s of thousands of miles (according to common sense, not BMW-specific experience). However, I took a look at mine. I've only got 5,500 miles on my rig and they look like hell with a lot of wear and cupping. What the hell?
Please tell me this isn't normal and/or that there's a far, far better solution. I'm guessing these tires cost a small fortune to replace and I'm not to keen on doing that annually. |

I realize this is a post from April 2012, but I am very curious if you had any luck getting the dealer or BMW to step up to the excessive tire wear issue. I have a 2012 X35D also with the Dunlops RF and at 12,500 miles the tires have less than 4/32" left.

My 2011 X5d is approaching 2 years and 21K miles, and I just ordered a new set of tires. Mine came with the 19" Bridgestones, which by most accounts are the worst of the OEM tires, but I guess in terms of longevity they're not too terrible. The rear tires aren't too terrible, but the front tires are nearly bald on the outer edge. An alignment 5K miles ago might have prevented this, but neither the dealer or I noticed it until recently.
I'm replacing them with the Continental 4x4 Contact SSRs (RFTs), and will be getting a proper alignment when they are mounted. I'd like to think that these tires could last more than 20k miles, but I'm not going to count on it. |

Tread depth is very low on the 20" sport tires that's for sure. Make sure wheel alignment is correct. Watrob from this site suggested high air pressure which I am now running and I cannot see any downside, but will have to wait a while to report on wear. My original Dunlop SP's were (for me at least) the worst tires ever because they were noisy and very fast wearing. Currently running 20" Bridgestone RFT's and so far so good.
I also dont think dealers are very good at dealing with tires and alignment. A tire shop is better although you need one that doesn't just say "Oh yeah X5's chew through tires"..........yes we know. The real issue is the fact that sport tyres are designed for lighter cars - 19"/20" low profile is for show right? There has to be some downside. |

BMW dealers will say the "excessive" tread wear is normal. I noticed the same thing on my vehicle and was advised as such.
Go to a reputable shop and get your vehicle aligned for "even" tread wear. |

I just ordered a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS. I hate Dunlop RFT and RFT period. There's nothing but good things to be said about the Continental ExtremeContact DWS (non-RFT). I'll let you know in a couple weeks once I got them installed. |
