I had the Buffalo Trace 'White Dog' - I think that is the clear stuff you refer to. Not just bad - TERRIBLE. I thought I had wrecked my palate permanently. It took me 3 days to get the yeasty taste out of my mouth. Still have most of the bottle (fortunately one of those 375's, not a full 750), free to a good home, or for some parts cleaning.

I don't get into the variety in Bourbon as much as single malts, so I just stick with some favorites - but same as with the scotch, I prefer barrel proofs: Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Knob Creek single barrel, and Bulleit Rye are the current roster. Back in my budget days, Bourbon was always a better bet for discount priced bottles - real whiskey, unlike the blended scotch that is largely column-still alcohol.

And don't let your anger become chronic and blunt your creativity - I hear that you can distill your own, but you need to pay tax on it (they only actually tax the laying of pipe in Nevada, everywhere else you just pay by the EtOH content). Of course, my family is 4 generations of rumrunners, so we don't really stay up on all the legal mumbo jumbo.

White Dog, that's it. Must have killed off a few of the memory bits drinking those 2 bottles I purposefully bought. Wasn't as aware there were other cask strength potions to imbibe.

^ It's those home-made ones that kill ya. I'm still regularly reminded by coworkers about that time I had them at a house party. The real lime hurts SO much more coming back out the top . . . after more of them than you can count on all 18 of your fingers

Would GLADLY accept donations for this advent calendar:

Click on the "Read more" link for the list of the best of the best whiskys included. Think a Gofundme is appropriate?

I couldn't make it to the superstores today, so I grabbed this in the supermarket liquor section. California rum. It hits the tongue with a strong alcohol bite, but finishes with a hint of coconut. I'm thinking it'd make a better mixer than it does by itself.

guys does anyone know what this bottle would be worth? Caldbeck MacGregor FOV. Says it was bottled in 1970 and still had the original price sticker on it for $145.

No idea, no cognac expert here. But one website I saw (and it was sketchy) suggested around 110 Euro apparently.

Just remember, it was bottled in 1970. That doesn't tell you how old it is, as cognac, like scotch, does not age in the bottle. Unlike wine, which does.

I've got a whiskey bottled back in 1956 or something, but it doesn't matter. It was a cheap whiskey back then and it still is now. I'm just not opening it as it's sentimental to me - it was a bottle given to my grandfather on his wedding night which I've obtained when his belongings were getting cleaned out as he went to a nursing home.

Angels Envy Rye Whiskey - Neat

I really like bourbons and have been trying different ones nearly every time I shop for a new bottle. I like to keep it less than $100 per though, can't get too crazy...

I haven't yet had a rye, but I watched Moonshiners last night and think I might need to add that nose to my nose.

I SO want 2 bottles of Tim Smith to give as presents (one to myself) but California. . .

Bulleit is my current favorite rye, but I haven't explored too many. It pays to check the rye% since some have a lot of corn and aren't as distinct (i.e. part bourbon).

Wait, Angels Envy has a Rye Whiskey now?? I enjoyed their bourbon, so I would definitely give that a try!

Last two bottles I grabbed-
  • Hibiki Harmony by Suntory- really nice japanese style scotch whisky, although I've liked most of the Suntory whiskies I've tried. I'm not a bit peat fan, so this is right up my alley. Lighter color and a bit sweet, but it's very smooth and drinks well neat. I'll make this a regular in my rotation.

  • Bowman Brothers Small Batch Bourbon - this is a local Virginia distillery that's won a number of awards in recent years. The Small Batch bourbon is fairly inexpensive, and its alright for the price. It tastes a little immature with the alcohol heat overtones, but the flavor is decent. I'll probably give their Single Barrel version a try in the near future for something a bit smoother and more refined flavors.

Looks more fun to make than drink. Floor polish probably tastes better...

I really like Hibiki and many of the Japanese whiskys, and they're growing in popularity really quickly. Nikka makes a Coffey Still grain whisky that I've had a number of times also, and I think it's starting to get sold in US stores.

If you're ever flying through Europe on a connecting flight in Zurich, I highly highly recommend the Swiss lounge there. They have a whisky bar with 200+ types of whisky, and it's all free to taste for people in the lounge. Awesome way to try several different types and find a few nicer bottles to have at home. It became one of my new favorite lounges when traveling this past year (I think Istanbul and Zurich are #1 & #2 for me)
