Guys,

Looking to trade my 3 series for an 2012-2013 X6 or X5 ...

Any info you can share with this model (ie. problems and what to stay away from)???

Thanks,

That's a big change....some people LOVED going to the X6 from the 3 - plenty did not.

I would look for a vehicle with Adaptive Drive - that will help with trying to hide the fact that you are going up almost 1,500 lbs in curb weight.

If you go from an N54 3-series to an N55 X5 or X6, you will feel like you are driving under water or something. I don't think the N55 engine was really meant to propel a 5k pound car. It gets the job done though. When I get 335 or 435 loaners, they feel really really quick by comparison. Not that I'd trade my X6 any day for either of those. I've never driven a BMW that weighs less than 5k lbs for an extended period of time, so I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

From an N54, I'd consider a 50i, or do an extended test drive in a 35i to make sure that you won't find it totally annoying.

Thank you for your insight... The x6 will be for my wife and will be mainly highway driven... I'm assuming the 50i would be a gas guzzler ...

Believe it or not, they are a lot closer in MPG than you think. Only about 2 mpg separates them real world. All depends on driving style and what not. I know that on the highway, I could get 20+ mpg in my X6 50i. City, not so much

Ya..my normal routine was probably 90/10 city/hwy any I usually got 13-14 in a 35i. However, at that shockingly low number, I only drive <9k mi/yr, so a tank would last about 3wks so I was ok with it. How much worse can a 50i really be?

I was willing to go from the 35d to a 35i because I was only getting 19mpg in the diesel. My thought was: how much worse could it get? Turned out to not be nearly enough different to mess with nasty diesel.

I just got rid of my 2012 X6 5.0 with 61k miles and bought a 2014 X6 3.5. I did 90/10 (maybe even 95/5) highway and could not get better than 18.9 mpg. I only have 500 miles on the 2014 3.5 but I am over 20mpg already which should increase to around 24-26 (possibly higher). I am commuting and decided warranty and fuel consumption were more important.

I loved the power and sound of my X6 5.0 for overtaking 50-80mph; in that area you would surely notice the difference. I came very close to buying a bargain basement fully loaded 640GC demo but just couldn't give up the X6. You don't necessarily buy an X6 for fuel consumption but if you are considering economy, then 3.5 is better - For power you have to get the 5.0.

I'm going to pickup an m car for fun and right now the M3/M4/M6 are looking like winners.

Oh and problems - my X6 5.0 was starting to show the costs of the 61k in terms of injectors, transfer case (both had to be replaced) and other engine sundry items/concerns.

Thanks for the great feedback guys... I'm gonna be going in this weekend to try both out... I'm intrigued with the diesel.... See if they have one.... I'm thinking the 2012 model since the bench 3seater in the back would be ideal especially since I will have two baby seats ....

You will love the Diesel.

Mid 20's MPG possible and the car feels like a rocket when you add a JBD tuner.

Remember, the diesel is not avail in the states or Canada (on the X6) - (not sure where GTA is? Greater Toronto?)
