F30 2016 Road Trip
Hey guys new to this forum here!!! I recently just bought a (almost) new 2016 BMW 320i. Have always been a huge BMW fan and now I have a dilemma here. Just days after I bought my car I recently just found out I got accepted into my dream school in Chicago. Thats good news but it brings the question what should I do with my car? I've been considering shipping gotta quote for $700 but looking at reviews the shipping company is hit or miss. Iv'e heard lots of stories of shipping car horror stories and I just don't wanna be one lol. I'm here in San Diego so a drive to Chicago about 2000 or so miles could possibly be done in 3 or more days considering.
So my question is should I ship it (car currently has 9500 miles) and save the car from any wear and tear and any possible damage or drive it but obviously gonna put some miles on the car and wear and tear? |

If I lived in the US and had journey like that ahead of me, I know what I'd be doing...
Enjoy the roads!

Thanks for the advice yea i'm leaning on driving the car. I've only driven just about 300 miles on the car since I bought it so I think a road trip is a good experience for me and the car.

If you stay away from trucks and keep your distance from cars in front of you, and unfortunately if you keep your speed to the speed limits - you could very well avoid any stone chips.
I know this is nutty but you could probably even tape up the lower bumper and some edges like on the hood or above the windshield etcetera and really minimize the chance of a chip. If your concern was engine drivetrain wear and tear - there's a lot positive about putting on the miles over the distance and time frame you have planned. A simple oil change and wiper fluid refill and your car will be perfect. |

Enjoy! I drove about 2100 miles from the east coast to the southwest a couple of years ago and it was a thoroughly enjoyable trip in the F30. There are some amazing sights and sceneries to see driving across the US, even if you don't leave the highway.

Agree on driving it, though if you ship I've used Intercity Lines in the past, they were pricey but worth it, very professional.
Also I don't think it would be crazy at all to cover your front bumper, partial hood, and mirrors with blue painters tape ahead of a drive like this on a car with new paint. |

drive it, pick some twisty roads, maybe add a day or two if necessary. you don't have to deal with snow/ice. Watch out for the man

I would definitely take advantage of this Road Trip. You will have a good time to bond with your car.
Either way your going to put miles on it eventually. I've bought my 340i xDrive in February and already have 11K lol. |

Take it on a road trip! What better way than to bond with your car than on a roadtrip through the Americas! Not only will it be scenic but i know for myself I literally drive about 1000 miles in a week when I get a new car. Just gotta get it out my system

I average about 19k a year. Drive it and enjoy it! They're great for road trips. I've installed the z3 netting on the transmission tunnels for extra storage.
