Hard disk failed in CIC, need advice.

Hello,

I live in the UK.

The HDD in my CIC unit on my 2012 X5 has failed, its frozen on the menu screen. Ive tried rebooting many times but it looks like the HDD has broke.
I dont think any info can be retrieved off it, so cloning may not be possible.
I can buy a new TOSHIBA HDD 80GB MK8050GAC from amazon for £29 but obviously it not formatted to work.
So the question is, is there anyone or company that can format the new HDD to allow it to work with an E70? Code it too if i give the VIN?
My knowledge of modern electronics is very poor, I struggled to even search for specialists.
Any pointers greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Alan

I would go ahead and pull the hdd now to avoid further read/writes. Order the new sdd. And I would try cloning the hdd to sdd (using clonezilla, disk to disk copy) because, if successful, would be the path of least resistance. If unsuccessful I could probably upload an image of my old hdd provided I can find it. Although nav and sat would not work without additional changes, I believe the rest would. But it is certainly worth trying to clone the current hdd as there not much to lose.

Just realized that toshiba drive is the same, not an ssd. But the same principle applies. You may consider an ssd as a replacement, just ensure it is larger than the current drive. For example, I used the one below. Cost was ~$45 when I purchased.

Hi,

Thanks, Ive not got the knowledge or hardware to clone the hdd, I had presumed because the screen is frozen that the hdd was not spinning, broken so unable to clone.
If you have or know where I can get the files to put onto the new hdd, that would be a help.
