In the market for 2012/13 x50i. Bad idea?
I'm on the fence in regards to the model year. I'm basically shopping for either a 2014/15 CPO or 2012/13 model year without warranty, as I much prefer the latter design.
The lack of warranty however terrifies me. Is it worth it? Basically how reliable are the x50i trims, both mechanically and electronically? Thanks in advance. |

If there were no cars left on earth, and the only option were an E70 50i, I suppose then I would get one. Of all vehicles available on the road, I would rather have an E70 35d over all. My 2 cents

I believe those who have had horror stories with the 50i's are a minority, but when they do have horror, its like catastrophic or quite lingering little problems.
I believe the S63tu sorted the problem areas out, so I think I would recommend one of those. Owning the 50i also depends on your skill level as a mechanic, if you want to wrench, the cost isn't as terrible as those who want to pay a BMW dealer to get whatever may break done. I think if the cards are right I may replace my 11 50i with a 2014 or newer 50i, but they are a softer 'truck' switching from the hydraulic steering to the electric. So long post short, go 2014+ I think they are sweet, have not had the pleasure to drive one yet though, only the 35i loaner I got

Thanks for the insight!!! I went to see a 2014 CPO 50i a few days ago, but it did not start. They were so embarrassed. A few days later, I got a call from the BMW sales manager who explained that they will be whole-saleing the vehicle, as it needed "some significant amount of repairs". |

I have had my 13' X6 50i almost 8 months now and its been trouble free. The only issue i have had was the battery discharge warning due to having the smaller original battery and not being replaced during the CCP. The dealer took care of it and replaced it.
Not sure if you were looking for an X5 or X6 50i but mine is for sale. It has the factory warranty til June 2018. |

I have a '12 X5 50i that just had $35k worth of warranty work on about 5k miles ago including a new engine. All the parts come with a 2 year unlimited mile warranty, so the motor is set.
truck has ~86k miles. |

No warranty on a 50i is just asking for a headache. My assumption is that your price point is below that of a CPO which is fine however if the potential for heavy repair costs is something you are concerned about why push your luck. Personally I feel the 35i and 35d are great alternatives that offer decent power and good reliability. The diesel is meant for more highway duty and is probably not the best option for around town and many short start stop cycles. The 35i is by far the most reliable and is just as quick as the 48i with better gas mileage.
Between the two model styles I prefer the refined interior and exterior design of the F14 however driving dynamics clearly fall in favor of the E70. |
