This thread goes to show - you can't be all things to all people. Personally, I hate chrome. Keep it the hell off my car. I'll accept it on the kidneys - that's it.

I love the nav - it works just fine - rather well I'd say. Much better than honda/acura/land rover/lexus.

As far as things I actually don't like:

1) I have the diesel - there is a good amount of lag from throttle tip in to response. Not sure if that's on purpose for fuel efficiency or just a characteristic of diesel + turbo. Once under way, it pulls like a freight train.

2) The running boards are damn near impossible to avoid when getting in/out - when they're dirty, they muss your pant leg. I haven't found a way to use them to step in/out which doesn't feel awkward. I'm 6'3". My 5'1" wife has the same complaint.

3) The rear window switches are in the perfectly wrong place so that when people rest their arms on the armrest, the windows accidentally go down.

These minor quirks aside - I f*ing love it. There is not another car I'd remotely consider over this one as the people hauler in the family. I'm close to getting another one for myself if they don't bring the 535d/540d over soon.

@ fishie: those apply on my new x6 with one more thing: a gap on the dash board all the way from the left side to the right side, just before the gaps for the windshield upoer air flow... Went to the show room and it turned that all x6 we have there have the same crack !!!

1. the rubber coating around steering wheel buttons is so cheap. It is peeling off.
2. third row mini-seats
3. glitchy i-drive system ('07)
4. thirsty car
5. black non-painted bumpers('07)
Other than that it is a great car

If you inadvertantly hit the rear hatch button on the remote when inserting to start vehicle, you have to get out to close hatch.

No thanks. I don't like chrome so much, so I am perfectly happy without it. I guess this is more of a personal preference.

Another thing I dislike, which really is my fault more than anything, is that the rear hatch opens and bangs on my garage door if I have my keys in my pocket walking around the house. I guess it managed to somehow hold the unlock button down long enough for the tailgate to open. I really need to get one of those key fob cover thing.

Why not just press the button on the dash to unlock the doors if this is an issue?

Why don't you just set the opening height of the rear hatch in the iDrive so it doesn't open so high?

Hope they make the next model like a 7 series !! A little chrome goes a long way
Man I wish you luck. Personally I will never buy another Mercedes again. I have own three c, e and r class. The 2006 e350 had transmission problems at 65k miles that the dealer ask for $9000. Ended up using a euro shop for $3900. Sold the car a week later. 2006 R350 had tranny problem at 72k miles. I guest Mercedes put the computer inside the tranny instead of outside. Cost me $2k. Electrical system failure on all three. One at 52k miles (no warranty. ), other at 74k and the R350 at 43k, 49k and at 67k. Yesterday coming from work notice the car was off when I open the garage. It seems the suspension airbag need replacement. Took it in and it going to run another $1.5k to replace.

All this does not include the schedule maintenance a,b,c that I have completed to my car.

I f...... hate Mercedes but I wish you a better owner experience. I will be selling the R class soon and buying a X5.

I also wish you good luck.

Neither our '09 ML or our '10 X5 have been anything that you could consider reliable. Both good vehicles with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Our BMW service experience has been much better than our MB one to this point.

I came from owning m3's and m5's
About 2 of each through their various iterations through the years and bow own an X5M. My biggest gripe is the lack of a highly informative message board. With both of those model cars it seemed as if any question I might have could be answered by doing a search for that particular issue. Not so in my opinion for this car. It's been Trouble free for me so far though. I'm chalking it up to the fact the x5m is relatively new but thought I should share that

Holly $hjt, I didn't know there were this many things people don't like about X5. I hope BMW has a chance to read this forum to bring their X5 to another level, without adding any $$$ to its already steep price tag.

There're a few items I don't quite like about my X5, but sure enough you guys already cover these: tailgate noise when the car gets aging, un-cover reading lights, RFT's are quite bumpy, iDrive is a bit non-intuitive.

Besides these, there are tons to other stuff that I LIKE about my X5

I love my X5 but can not for the life of me understand the small things that are wrong. Like the Back up camera at night. Totally useless. Why? The clunky Idrive. How is it that a high end vehicle has such unsorted issues. Isn't that why we buy a higher priced vehicle? By the way 08 X5.

No lights in the rear storage area. The ones on the inside of the back hatch are weak and useless.

The run flat tires are just throw aways.

These may qualify as nits, as I LOVE my '11 X5d:

- Tranny: hate pushing the "p" for park. How about just sliding the joystik all the way forward for park, just like other auto trannies?

- Tranny: Put it in park, set the parking brake. When on a hill push start/stop. The car will lurch forward, as if the parking brake didn't exist.

-Nav: Inputting addresses into the nav is slow. How about a touch screen?

I'm sure there will be more...

Positives are legion...

I agree, address input is a pain through the iDrive, that's why I email them to the nav system from Google Maps.

Me too. My cheap garmin is easier to input addresses into. Oh well, as a friend of mine is find of saying, "you can't have everything". And I agree with him.

I feel you, I didn't want to order the steps but I did for my two year old son. But the night I brought it home I opened the door and he used the steps and climbed right in. So that validated the steps.
