Mine does the same, can't replicate it, only on cold starts and cold out

Exactly what happened with my M3. If it sat in really, really cold temps and then I started it, I'd get a screech for about 1-2 seconds, maybe a second one as well. Didn't end up doing anything about it as the shop foreman, who I trust a lot with my cars, said don't worry about it, there was nothing they could do. I'm almost positive it was the belt tensioners engaging.

Garage List
1976 Triumph TR6  [10.00]
1993 Bentley Turbo R  [10.00]
2011 X5  [10.00]
I've had this happen before, very sporadically. The dealer wasn't able to diagnose it during two appointments, five months apart. I told them it may be the starter. However, they put in a new battery a couple weeks ago, and I haven't heard it since, despite the freezing weather.

It's in really great condition - big thanks to Motorwerks of Barrington (just outside Chicago) for delivering a beautiful X5M to me. Carbon Black is a gorgeous color - love the blue hue in the sun. The Silverstone interior is completely unpractical... and I wouldn't trade it for anything else!

Service history report my broker had pulled shows NOTHING except regular maintenance performed, so I plan to take it in sometime in the next couple of weeks and ask for them to take a look at the driveshaft. That, plus two issues I've encountered so far: 1) Comfort Access isn't working for some reason (new batteries didn't resolve the issue) and 2) Slow to start in the morning (battery?)... and when it does there's a short but ear-splitting screech. No rattles/clunks/weird squeaks from suspension or rear latch, but there is some noise when turning from the center console.

Thanks to everyone who's piped in!
Had the same thing on mine mate, although I have a 35i: cranking/starting became more and more difficult, and the screeching would happen at least once a week. They replaced the battery for me (when they quoted me how much they were, I almost fell over) but it cranks wonderfully again now, and no more screeching noise.

-Make sure you get an alignment initially to prevent excessive/uneven tire wear. Tires aren't cheap for these things! You can probably negotiate this into the deal with the purchase.
- is leaking fuel injectors something that'd kick a CEL? I've had direct injection in diesels before, but never for gas, so I'm always curious about the sounds coming from my engine when the radio is off. My cold idle is stuttery in the morning, car lurches if I drive away during that first 30 seconds, but after that it's whisper quiet (minus the injector ticking) and it's got plenty of power
- mines been replaced from the factory, so that's a plus
- I did lifetime alignment through Firestone once I put coilovers on my X5, so I'll do the same on my X5M

- 64k on mine, I've got a random clunking over bumps that I'm not sure ab out, but truck feels stable at all speeds, so who knows. I'll likely replace every suspension component when I do coilovers for peace of mind; it's what I did on my E53 as well
- mine leak and for some reason the boot going directly into the turbo's has wobble in it, which I'm trying to diagnose as maybe a missing gasket
- what happens when these fail? I LOVE my pano roof so I wanna make sure to replace things before it snowballs into worse

-could be stabilizer bars, Ive replaced pretty much all front end suspension components at this point.
-if you have a leaky CCV you will want that fixed
-My clips/rails were broken, but hadnt yet caused an issue with the sunroof open/closing. I assume if it was left though, that eventually the mechanism would get worn and the sunroof would stop working. If that happens, youd likely need a new sunroof mechanism and mounting parts/seals, which is not cheap...the clips/rails however are cheap. apparently sunroof maintenance is specialized so the BMW service center I go to only had one guy certified to work on them.

I was going to create a whole new thread, but here goes I the meantime...

Forget it, tried to upload pics but hate how this site can't adjust them itself. Here's a link to a folder I created.
