How do you tip?

So when I dine out I still haven't exactly found a formula for tipping.....but I'm usually good for 10% assuming the server was competent enough to be courteous and no spill food or drink on our group.
I will not give tips to incompetence(messing up order completely or rudeness)
Tell us what disqualifies a server from getting a tip from you.

Having been in the industry for 10 years I promise you are not making any friends with your servers leaving a 10% tip in a restaurant.

Standard for competent service is 15% and I go to 20% for excellent service. Waitstaff in most place make a minimum wage that is far below the national minimum wage so they rely heavily on those tips for their income.

For poor service, certainly below the 15% all the way to zero if the service is that poor. And I mean poor service by the waitstaff. Having been in the business I understand that if the kitchen gets backed up causing delays, that is not the waiters fault. As long as they remain attentive while we wait I don't penalize the waiter for these delays. Screwing up the order, being inattentive, spilling/dropping something all mean low/no tip...

Tips are called that for a reason....I tip for good service and will tip more for exceptional service but that is very rare.
Find way too many people in the service industry think they are owed a tip....sorry to say that they are not,they have to work for it just like any other job.

20% and I round up. So a $34 meal gets a $7 tip and so on. I rarely run across a rude server. Once in a while an order gets messed up, but that's not always the server's fault. Sometimes it's on the kitchen staff. If I think the server messed up or is ignoring us (like when it's time to leave and we just want to pay and go), then I might round down instead of up. $34 gets $6 instead of $7.

My state (and six others I believe) includes servers, and other jobs that were traditionally paid via tips, in minimum wage laws, which are among the highest in the nation.

So, no need to tip. Big brother has taken care of that for us. Thank goodness I no longer have to do math after a meal.

Wow....you are generous tipping for bad service.
I understand servers job aren't always easy as sometimes customers can be unreasonable and difficult .....but a good server can adapt to the worst of them and be good actors and believe that's what differentiates a good one from bad.
You have never withheld a tip....and if so why?

I'm too nice, I guess. Sometimes the bad service is not always the fault of the server. Like, long waits for food etc could be the kitchen's fault. But I'm also the type to never complain about my food in a restaurant either.

You also have to remember tipping is a regional thing. When in Asia or Europe, I tip much less. Also if I'm in a little cash-only Chinese restaurant, I'm likely tipping less too.

What you have to consider when tipping is that the server isn't the only one who gets the tip. Now a days, tips get pooled and then split amongst everyone at the restaurant, in various percentages. The bus boys, bar tenders, hosts, line chefs, etc all get a fraction of the tip you give (through card). If you want to give your server a tip, best to leave cash.

Speaking of tipping, what'a up with some restaurants when you're getting take out and/or they don't have table service at all having a tip section on the receipt or a tip jar? All you did was put a bag on the counter, maybe I'm missing something...is it implied the workers at that establishment are getting a tipped minimum wage or what? I always feel they're just trying to get extra money.

Some places in the world don't even expect tips.....they are just happy you bought from their establishment.
Here in the city I find it is expected one tips and is considered rude if you don't....but that is just social pressure with no consideration of actual value.
I look for value and if none exists...adjust accordingly.

I call those the donation jar or go fund me jars.....which is just another form of panhandling without the direct shame of doing so.....many little shops by me have them and some of them have fake charity jars too......shameless!

Yes, but it's considered a cultural norm here.
In Germany, it's also normal to stay out of the left lane if you're driving slower and people behind you flash their lights at you to move. Do that in parts of the US, and you could get shot.
Please tell me you're joking that you don't tip at all.
