Decisions, decisions...

currently in a 2011 X5 3rd with 60K on the odometer.

have a the option to by a 2010 X5M with 48K on the odometer for a whisper over 40K from my local BMW dealer.

Insurance, taxes, etc aside would anyone care to offer opinion on making the switch?

All opinions will be respected.

Funny, as there's a 2011 X5M locally to me also with 45K on the ticker. My X5 currently has 50K miles. Only thing holding me back is that the X5M is not CPO, and my X5 is. I'd have to purchase that, which cannot be cheap on the X5M.

Do you have a link to the car in question?

Other than higher maintenance costs, is this really a question? You're going from quiet suburban soccer mom, to an uber powerful SUV with timeless styling accents...

If this is a temporary car, not something you're going to run into the ground, I say go for it. I would if the timing and price is right.

I would have a thorough, independent, PPI done on that X5M (unless it's CPO'd) and obtain as much maintenance history as I could before considering this.

M models in general come with much higher maintenance costs, so I'd be real careful stepping into a 5 year old one with nearly 50k on the odometer unless most things checked out with a PPI. I found a 50i about a year ago that looked real nice, but a PPI revealed several bigger issues which led to to quickly pass on it. I just think they're worth it.

Otherwise it sounds like a good switch to me!

OK, here we go:

- it's a 3 owner car

- it was previously CPO'd in 2012 at 26K mi. That means that he dealer does NOT have to re-inspect again, they can simply transfer the CPO and collect a premium. I would ask for the CPO checklist and look at the date it was signed. The other SIGNIFICANT disadvantage is that the pre-2104 CPO's did not cover small electronics and NAV!! Post-2014 CPO do. This car has Rear Entertainment, a source of many problems. It also interferes with your elbow and the arm rest when lowered in a down position.

- this car has sport seats. Depending on your size (and weight), these seats are VERY uncomfortable on long trips (2+ hrs). I know, I've had them and traded my 2011 for just that reason. I now have multi-contour (comfort seats).

- the in service date is Oct. 2009. This car is now over 5 years old!

- radiator was replaced, just 4 months ago ... why? Did this engine overheat? How do you check?

- as previous posters have said: SIGNIFICANTLY higher costs on just about everything.

- I would keep looking ... Consider a '12 or better yet a '13 50i m-sport with a 10% boost in torque and HP and put a tune on it, for about the same money.
