Sorry, another dumb exhaust question.
Does the e70 have exhaust valves?
I did many searches and can't get a direct answer. I believe what I read is that they don't. Is that correct? Thanks |

thanks for your reply.
is there a way to manually open and close them? I couldn't find anything in the owners manual, and have tried tinkering with the drive modes, and nothing seems to change. however, the cold starts are noticeably louder. |

Only the M models have the valves not the regular e70's. If you have an M then press the M button on the steering wheel and the EDC button near the shifter. That should open up the valves.

I have M, but I don't think my inner valve gets open when M button is pressed, since EDC gets turn on automatically when M button is pressed, does it need to be reached certain RPM or gear shifter needs to be on M/S (tabs to left)?

No. Should open instantly. Check your vacuum line coming from the valves. If they are disconnected or pinched the valve may not open. They may also be seized.

Actually the EDC is a separate function, it stands for Electronic Damping Control, http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...r_control.html It's actually related to the suspension and has no bearing on the exhaust valves. I've found the easiest way to check if your valves are operating correctly is to start your truck up (warm) and then push the "M" button. You should hear a noticeable increase in exhaust drone or rumble. Then just take a flash light and take a peek inside either of the two outside muffler tips and you should see a circular flap that is half way open. If it's not, then there's a problem with it. |

And I understand cold start loudness, (I have the full Akra system w/dps) but have found that when I start the truck if I immediately put the transmission into reverse and then back to park this causes the engine management system to think I'm going to drive so it aborts the cold start program. The whole reason for the program is to get the catalytic converters up to temp asap, all modern engines do it. It's just that our beasts really like to roar! |

Just to confirm, it's inner/inside two mufflers not outside mufflers that have valves correct? |

Sorry, I gave you some bad info. The OEM exhaust has the valves on the inner tips. I took a picture of my OEM exhaust that's hanging in the garage. The second picture is of the Akrapovic exhaust that has the valves on the outside tips. |
