Driving my X5 on the beach

Who says the X5 doesn't rule the beach!!!

I took my 2011 X5 Xdrive35i to San Felipe Mexico this last week and while I was a bit worried I'd get stuck I had back up in case I needed to be towed on/off the sand. The X5 did amazing, I used every bit of available space for camping gear including the roof rack and the sand was very soft, dry and deep and I had run flats on, I didn't bother lowering the pressure as it wouldn't help.
Slow and steady traction control off shifting between 1st and 2nd.
The only issue was when in reverse traction control on or off I would barely move, hit forward gear and no problem... weird

Everyone with me gave me a maximum of 30% chance of even getting halfway on the beach, needless to say they were impressed... Me too

the wide tires helped a bunch, I am sure.

I remember taking my 2wd Dodge to the beach in Corpus when I was in college and I never once got stuck. The key is momentum, right?

For sure the wide tires helped, they were just about as wide as the other vehicles tires are when they are deflated to 15psi.

I'm not sure momentum made any difference cause I stopped and started a couple of times on the way out and still never had a problem.

OP,
There's really not anything better nor worse with X5 compared to majority of other vehicles when it comes to beach, snow and rain. Just another AWD vehicle out there.
So, your fears (and your friends anticipation) before coming to the beach were unfounded. Probably based on a couple dozen youtube videos of X5 on summer tires getting stuck in various situations.

P.S. Is that Sequoia in the background even a 4x4 version?

My biggest trepidation was the run flats, I've driven on this beach many times in 2wd trucks and even fwd cars but they all had the tires down to 15psi and while i have gotten stuck it was pretty much driver error.
I live in Arizona so we don't know what it means to have anything other than summer tires

Yup 4x4 Sequoia is the background, also on the beach 4x4 hybrid Tahoe and an EcoBoost F150 4x4.
