E70 X5M Vacuum Pump - Rear heat shield removal...

Hey All,

I set out to replace my vacuum pump as I have an oil leak and suspect the pump is the cause. Has anyone else done this DIY and know if it's possible to remove only the rear passenger side shield to access the one bold behind that shield?

There are 3 visible bolts that are easy access and I think I can feel one dead center on the underside of where the 2 shields meet against the firewall. Does anyone know if there are any more? And can that one in the center be removed from under the vehicle?

Any help insights would be greatly appreciated!

There is a middle bolt that keep a both left and right together. And then there are 1-2 more bolts that keep that heat shield on. One is accessible only from the bottom.

I have 3 bolts out currently - 1 Top center and 2 easy access bolts closer to the pump. So if I am hearing you correctly there is only a 4th bolt that I will need to access from below? And it feels like it is more center? And I should be able to pry this shield away far enough to get at that pump bolt?

Yes, there is one that's only accessible from the bottom.

Just a heads up, there are two part numbers for this pump, one which will cost you about 500 dollars (11668605976), the other will cost you about 61 dollars (11668649747). They are identical from what I can tell, both BMW OEM parts, I got the 61 dollar one from FCP and have over 10K miles on it and working flawless. Link below. I believe BMW heavily discounts this one for warranty replacement purposes as there is no way they can make profit off a part like this at 61 dollars, take advantage of it and save over 400 dollars.

Yes - I purchased the $61.00 version and it is stamped BMW. I couldn’t figure out the “why” but I like your rational.

And if anyone is still on a budget, Rockauto have the SMP intermotor pump for $32. Which have the same bmw stamp with oem part number on it. I bought one during my rebuild.

Hi SR. What are the symptoms of a failing vacuum pump.I have a E70 with the N55 engine and have oil in the vacuum chamber on the passenger side. Appreciated.

The Vacuum pump on turbo engines is responsible for your brake booster and also for the turbocharger wastegates via the pressure converters on the E series X's. It may be used for the exhaust flaps if your truck has them. When it starts the fail, you will get low boost codes and if it gets really bad you will have to use greater effort to brake & exhaust flaps wont work.

If your not having any issues other then Oil in the chamber, then it could be a failed internal oil control seal and a good indication that the pump itself is on its way out.
