BMW 2008 X5 E70 iDrive restarts continuously

Hi Everyone,

Stating last week the iDrive on my X5 restarting continuously. It boots up, stays for couple of minutes, restarts (probably crash) and goes in a loop. When it starts all functions seems to be working fine. I was able to isolate the issue to Navigation DVD drive. If I pop the Navigation DVD the crashes seems to stop.

The Navigation had issues for past couple of years especially on Hot days it used to error out with failed to read map data so I am guess something messed up with dvd rom drive that is causing iDrive to crash.

Is it easy to replace the DVD drive as I am sure dealer is going to charge a lot to diagnose the issue and fix. If it is relatively easy, where can I get the replacement drive and how do I swap. Any ballpark cost estimates would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance
Bhamu

How do I clean the lens? Any idea why the heat outside causes the read errors?

Where I can get a new drive and how do I replace it?

The dealer can order a drive for you; as dealers sell BMW parts. Or you can find the part number (use Real OEM) and then put the part number in Google (or any search engine) and get pricing.

Dealer quoted $900 dollar for diagnosis and replacement if the drive is the issue so I am going to give it a shot myself. One question though, dealer mentioned it involves coding. Does replacing DVD drive requires me to take it dealer anyway for coding or they are just scaring me not to do it myself.

Also what is "core return" means?

New drive didn't work

I got a new DVD drive and installed it but did not help. Once the navigation dvd drive is put in, iDrive goes into crash-restart-crash loop.

Any advise?

Then you are going to need to replace the main unit for the nav/iDrive system.

Someone just posted an excellent step by step guide to replace the HDD with an SSD:

Seems to be a LCI though.
