Oil change price

Just curious
If anyone did an off-schedule oil change
How much dealer charged you?

I just dropped her off to do first oil change with 7K on the clock

I'm sure that the oil used in the ///M models are of a high grade but not sure about the use of different grades of oil used on the different engine types offered by BMW. I did make an attempt to do an unscheduled oil change a couple of years ago but the SA advised me not to.

I was told by the SA that i should just follow the maintenance schedule. When I expressed my concern about possible long term mechanical issues if I simply followed the schedule instead of going with my prior experience when it comes to basic car mailtenance, he told me that since the warranty is in effect, al issues would be covered by BMW should any issues arrise.

I took his advise, and now I only bring the car in for it's scheduled maintenace... is that unwise...?

Can't speak on the X6M, but for my M3 it uses full synthetic 10W-60 that is around $13 a liter. 9.3 for the change...so it adds up quickly.

Honestly, i feel that 15K interval is a bit too long
It's cheaper for BMW to change it only 3 times during maintanance plan than say 5 or 6, so they stick with 15K change
I think at the very least it was wise for me to do one off-schedule for the first 5-7K miles

I agree with you. 15K is longer than i would like to go without changing the oil. I was even thinking that no matter what, a car shouldn't go any more than 5k miles without an oil change but the SA assured me that if the oil used in my car now cna do the 15K without any problems or worries.

I understand that it is cheaper for BMW to spread the intervals out so they won't have to spend money out of their pocket to change the oil everytime a driver wants, but i would imagine that changing the oil for the customer who is requesting it, is probably less expensive that replacing engine parts that could be damaged during the lack of oil changes... just saying.

The customer's driving habits also affect the frequency of needed oil changes and if I was an SA dealing with a driver with a car like yours, I would reconsider the whole 15K required oil change... I don't know too many people that would spend 100K on a high performance vehicle like yours just to do the speed limit and drive like the average couple going to the mall on a saturday afternoon... lol

Not really
The engine should definetelly last longer than 50K miles with even 20K oil changes
But after that, they dont care, it's out of your pocket, right?

I see, so if that is the case, out of curiosity, why did you spend money out of YOUR pocket to have the oil change done ahead of schedule if you truly belive the engine is designed to go 4 times longer without an oil change...? Especially since you could of had the scheduled oil change done at no cost to you way before you hit 20K miles?

I think what he's saying is that even if you waited 20K miles to do the change the engine would last past 50K/4years at which point it would not be BMW's problem anymore, it would be yours.

They're running the change interval out to the ends of what synthetic oil usually lasts (depending on driving habits and conditions). More than the oil itself I'd be concerned with the oil filter staying in that long and needing to be changed before 15-16K miles.

Just my personal opinion, but I think 8K miles is still a pretty safe number for both oil and filter (if it's synthetic). So still that would put most owners at only paying for it themselves about once a year if it's changed twice in a 16000 mile period. (once owner, once BMW)

Yep
This is what i've been doing with my 335i for 4 years and planning to do the same with my X6M
However, with 335 it was $60 per change, 40 parts + 20 Labor at local shop
Now it's $200 at local BMW dealer
I dont trust anyone else to mess with my ///M, even if it is a simple oil change

The X5M and X6M do not use special oil like the M3's, M5's and M6's It uses the same 5/30W motor oil that the rest of the BMW lineup uses. I believe and from what I have seen the new M5 will be the same as the X M series and the 1M series coupe.

The M's appear to require different (more expensive ?) oil than the standard models.

"The following is the only recommended and approved synthetic oil for BMW M (Motorsport) vehicles in the US market with gasoline engines, at the present time.

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines:

Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil

Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420)

If Castrol High Performance Synthetic Oil is not available and you need to add oil between oil changes, only use synthetic oils with the following specifications for M vehicles:

Viscosity - preferred SAE 10W-60

Alternative - SAE 10W-40, SAE 5W-50 or SAE 10W-50

Use only oils with an API rating of SJ/CF, SK/CF or higher.

Great information but the engine in the X5M and X6M is the S63 which I don't see listed in this post. The 2013 M5 will have the S63u. These engines confirmed with multiple sources uses traditional BMW synthetic 5/30W.

change it yourself and you'll likes spend a little over $100-120 for oil and parts. Will take you about 35mins to 1 hr depending on your familiarity with the process and save tons on the $200+ jobs at the dealer. I changed the oil on my e92M3 all the time in between factory intervals and do the same on my Z4M and 997. Easy to do and way to keep your engine running and in good condition for less cost.

I change mine with factory spec oil around every 7500-10000 miles depending on use/frequency of the vehicle. Everyone else is right about BMW's Maintenance schedule...its great for BMW but not so for the owners as the frequency of changes and maintenance is dumbed down and stretched out to be more cost effective to BMW...yeah synthetic oil is made to last longer...but every mechanic I talked to has said that longer duration changes don't do the engine or parts any favors! Email the guys at Bimmer Magazine or Roundel for their Old School Maintenance Schedule for BMW and you'll see what I mean. It contains the previous maintenance intervals BEFORE BMW started picking up the tab and when it was your dime...funny how they changed drastically when they started paying for maintenence for the 1st 4 yrs/50k! Don't get me wrong..they are great cars but you gotta do a little legwork to keep em running they way they were designed and built!
